Family Counselor Green Card Jobs
Family Counselor roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which lets U.S. employers permanently hire foreign professionals. Community mental health agencies, nonprofit social service organizations, and hospital systems regularly sponsor qualified candidates. Your master's degree in counseling or social work is central to the PERM filing.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Family Counselor
Verify your licensure transfers across state lines
PERM filings are tied to the job's work location, so your clinical license must be valid in that specific state. Research reciprocity agreements early, since some states require supervised hours before granting full licensure to foreign-trained counselors.
Target employers with PERM filing history
Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data to identify which community mental health centers and hospital systems have filed PERM applications for counseling roles. Agencies that have done it before understand the process and are far less likely to withdraw sponsorship mid-filing.
Use Migrate Mate to filter green card sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to find Family Counselor openings at employers with documented EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. This cuts the time you'd spend cold-contacting HR teams who've never navigated PERM for a licensed counseling role.
Get your foreign credentials evaluated before applying
PERM requires DOL to confirm your foreign degree meets U.S. equivalency standards. Request an academic credential evaluation from an NACES-member agency before job applications begin, so your master's in counseling or psychology is recognized as equivalent to a U.S. degree.
Negotiate the job offer before PERM recruitment starts
Once an employer initiates PERM, the job duties and requirements are locked in for the DOL recruitment phase. Clarify your title, caseload responsibilities, and supervision structure before the process begins, since changes after filing can require restarting the entire application.
Understand EB-3 priority dates for your birth country
Even after PERM certification and an approved I-140, you can't adjust status until your priority date becomes current in the Visa Bulletin. Nationals from backlogged countries face waits that affect when you can legally change employers or relocate under green card portability rules.

Find Family Counselor JobsFamily Counselor Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Family Counselor role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Family Counselors typically qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers when the role requires a bachelor's degree, or under EB-2 when a master's degree or licensure at the advanced-degree level is the employer's standard requirement. Clinical positions at hospitals and community mental health agencies often specify a master's in counseling, social work, or a related field, which supports EB-2 classification.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for Family Counselor positions?
H-1B is a temporary status with a 6-year limit and annual lottery exposure, while PERM leads to permanent residency with no lottery and no expiration. PERM requires your employer to complete a DOL-supervised recruitment process proving no qualified U.S. worker is available. The timeline is longer, often two to four years from PERM filing to an approved green card, but the outcome is lawful permanent residency rather than a renewable visa.
What does the PERM recruitment process look like for a licensed counseling role?
Your employer must run DOL-mandated advertisements, including job postings, newspaper ads, and internal notices, before filing the ETA Form 9089 with DOL. The job description used in recruitment is binding, so the duties must match what you'll actually perform. Counseling roles often draw qualified U.S. applicants, so your employer's documentation of why U.S. candidates were not selected must be thorough and consistent.
How do I find Family Counselor jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Most job postings don't advertise green card sponsorship clearly, so filtering by employer sponsorship history is more reliable than keyword searching. Migrate Mate lets you search Family Counselor roles specifically at employers with verified EB-2 and EB-3 PERM filing history, which removes the guesswork of cold-contacting HR departments unfamiliar with employment-based green card filings.
Can I change Family Counselor employers after my I-140 is approved?
Yes, under AC21 portability rules, you can change to a same or similar occupation after your I-140 has been approved for at least 180 days and your green card application is pending. Family counseling, social work, and related clinical roles generally meet the same-or-similar standard, but you should confirm the new role's O*NET classification aligns with your original PERM job description before making the move.
