Family Practitioner Green Card Jobs
Family Practitioner roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which requires employers to document recruitment efforts before filing an I-140 immigrant petition. Physician shortages in underserved areas and rural health systems make sponsorship common, and board certification strengthens your application.

Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
PERM filings for Family Practitioners require proof of foreign medical graduate credentials. Confirm your Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification is current and your state medical license is active before any employer begins the labor certification process.
Target Federally Qualified Health Centers strategically
Federally Qualified Health Centers and rural health clinics face chronic physician shortages, making them practiced PERM sponsors. These employers often have existing immigration counsel and understand the EB-2 National Interest Waiver pathway available to physicians serving medically underserved populations.
Search sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Family Practitioner openings by employers with active green card filing history. This cuts out health systems that advertise roles but lack established PERM infrastructure, saving you weeks of back-and-forth with recruiters.
Request the prevailing wage determination early
DOL must issue a prevailing wage determination before your employer can file the PERM application. Confirm the offered salary meets or exceeds the OFLC Wage Search figure for your specialty and geographic area, since an underpaying offer restarts the DOL wage process.
Clarify whether EB-2 NIW or PERM fits your situation
Physicians who commit to full-time clinical work in a Health Professional Shortage Area for five years can self-petition under EB-2 National Interest Waiver, bypassing employer-sponsored PERM entirely. USCIS reviews both pathways, but the NIW route removes dependence on a single employer.

Find Family Practitioner JobsFamily Practitioner Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Family Practitioner roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Family Practitioners qualify for both categories. EB-2 applies when the role requires an advanced degree or when you pursue a National Interest Waiver by committing to clinical work in a Health Professional Shortage Area. EB-3 covers licensed physicians in roles where a standard medical degree meets the position's requirements. Your employer's immigration counsel typically recommends the category based on your credentials and the facility's needs.
How is green card sponsorship different from H-1B for physicians?
H-1B is a temporary work visa with a six-year limit and an annual lottery for most applicants. Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 leads to permanent residency with no expiration and no annual lottery at the EB-3 level for many nationalities. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM and I-140 processing together can take two or more years before you receive a priority date, compared to H-1B status that can activate within months.
What is the PERM process like for a Family Practitioner role?
Your employer files an Application for Permanent Employment Certification with DOL, demonstrating through documented recruitment that no qualified U.S. worker was available for the position. For physicians, recruitment steps include journal advertising and job postings that meet DOL standards. After DOL certifies the PERM, your employer files Form I-140 with USCIS, and you wait for a current priority date before filing for adjustment of status or an immigrant visa.
Can I find Family Practitioner jobs with confirmed green card sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate filters Family Practitioner openings by employers with documented green card filing history, so you can focus on health systems and clinics that already have PERM infrastructure in place. This is more reliable than asking recruiters at the outset, since many employers will only confirm sponsorship intent after an offer is extended.
Does a J-1 waiver affect my green card sponsorship timeline?
If you trained on a J-1 visa and received a Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver, you're typically required to work at the sponsoring facility for three years before changing employers or adjusting status. Your PERM priority date can be established during this service period, but you generally cannot complete adjustment of status until the waiver obligation is fulfilled. Confirm the exact terms of your waiver agreement with your immigration attorney before negotiating an offer.
