Align your credentials to PERM job requirements
PERM certification locks in a specific job description, so your degree and experience must match precisely. If your engineering credentials came from outside the U.S., get them evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before applications begin.
Target employers with active PERM filing histories
Large engineering firms, defense contractors, and industrial manufacturers file PERM applications regularly. Search DOL's public disclosure data through the OFLC Wage Search to identify which companies have sponsored Mechanical Project Engineer roles in recent years.
Understand how EB-2 and EB-3 eligibility affects your timeline
EB-2 requires an advanced degree or equivalent, while EB-3 covers bachelor's-level professionals. For most countries, both categories currently have priority dates, so confirm your country's Visa Bulletin cutoff with USCIS before choosing which category your employer files under.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsorship-ready engineering employers
Instead of manually sorting through job postings, use Migrate Mate to search Mechanical Project Engineer roles filtered by employers with documented green card sponsorship history, saving research time during the employer-targeting stage.
Negotiate green card sponsorship terms before accepting an offer
Ask explicitly whether the employer covers PERM attorney fees and I-140 filing costs, and confirm the job duties won't change materially post-filing. A significant role change after PERM certification can require restarting the entire labor certification process.
Prepare your O*NET documentation for specialty occupation support
PERM filings for engineering roles often reference the O*NET occupation profile to establish that a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering is the standard industry requirement. Gather documentation showing how your specific duties align with that profile before your employer's attorney drafts the job description.
Green Card Mechanical Project Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Mechanical Project Engineer role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Mechanical Project Engineers typically qualify under both categories. EB-3 applies when the role requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical or related engineering. EB-2 applies when the position requires an advanced degree, such as an MS in mechanical engineering, or when you can demonstrate the equivalent through progressive experience. Your employer's attorney determines which category fits based on the actual job requirements.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant status with a three-year initial period, subject to the annual lottery cap. Green card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is permanent residence, with no annual cap at the petition level. The PERM labor certification process is more involved than an H-1B filing and typically takes longer end-to-end, but the outcome is a path to lawful permanent residency rather than a renewable temporary status.
How long does the PERM and green card process take for a Mechanical Project Engineer?
DOL's PERM labor certification currently averages well over a year for analyst review cases. After PERM approval, the employer files an I-140 petition with USCIS, which can take six to twelve months at regular processing. If your priority date is current, adjustment of status or consular processing follows. For applicants from India or China, per-country Visa Bulletin backlogs can add years to the wait.
What documents should I have ready before asking an employer to sponsor my green card?
Gather your academic transcripts, degree certificates with any foreign credential evaluations, a complete employment history with job titles and duties, and any professional engineering licenses or certifications. PERM requires the employer to advertise the role at the prevailing wage determined by the OFLC Wage Search, so having your credentials documented accurately helps ensure the job description drafted by your employer's attorney matches your actual background.
Where can I find Mechanical Project Engineer jobs with green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search engineering roles specifically filtered by employers with documented EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship history, so you're not guessing which companies are willing to file PERM. That's a faster starting point than reviewing general job postings and then researching each employer's immigration practices separately.
