Align your credentials to PERM job requirements
PERM requires your education and experience to match the employer's minimum requirements exactly. Request a copy of the draft job description before filing begins so your degree, field of study, and years of experience align with what DOL will certify.
Target R&D-heavy employers with established PERM pipelines
Pharmaceutical, semiconductor, aerospace, and defense companies file PERM petitions regularly for R&D Engineering roles. Look for employers with dedicated immigration counsel or in-house HR teams, which signals an existing green card process rather than a first-time sponsorship attempt.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers actively sponsoring green cards
Migrate Mate surfaces R&D Engineer positions at companies with verified green card sponsorship history, saving you from filtering out non-sponsoring roles manually. Search by job title and location to see active EB-2 and EB-3 filings for this occupation.
Verify your role qualifies as a specialty occupation under EB-2
EB-2 eligibility requires your R&D position to require an advanced degree as a standard industry requirement. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your specific engineering specialty to document that a master's or higher is the normal entry requirement for similar roles.
Negotiate sponsorship commitment before accepting an offer
Get written confirmation of sponsorship before signing an offer letter. Ask specifically whether the employer will file PERM, cover attorney fees, and commit to an I-140 filing after PERM certification, since verbal assurances aren't enforceable once you've accepted.
Check prevailing wage early using OFLC Wage Search
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your R&D Engineer role and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage so you can flag wage discrepancies that could delay or invalidate the PERM filing later.
Green Card R D Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an R&D Engineer role typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most R&D Engineer positions qualify for EB-2 when the role genuinely requires a master's degree or higher as a standard industry requirement, which is common in semiconductor, biotech, and defense research. Roles requiring only a bachelor's degree typically fall under EB-3. Your employer's attorney will request a prevailing wage determination from DOL to confirm the appropriate category before filing PERM.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for R&D Engineers?
H-1B visa is a temporary, renewable work visa subject to an annual lottery with no guarantee of selection. Green card sponsorship through PERM and I-140 leads to permanent residency with no cap concerns at the EB-3 level for most countries outside India and China. The PERM process takes longer, often 18 to 36 months or more from start to approval, but it permanently resolves your status rather than requiring repeated renewals.
How can I find R&D Engineer jobs that include green card sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search specifically for R&D Engineer roles at companies with verified EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. Many job postings don't explicitly advertise green card sponsorship even when the employer does sponsor, so filtering by actual PERM filing history gives you a more accurate picture than relying on job description language alone.
What documentation does my employer need for PERM labor certification in an R&D Engineer role?
PERM requires your employer to conduct a supervised recruitment campaign showing no qualified U.S. worker was available for the position. For R&D roles, documentation typically includes placement ads, interview records, and written rejection reasons for each U.S. applicant. Your job duties, minimum requirements, and offered wage must all match the certified position exactly, since USCIS will cross-reference the I-140 petition against the PERM application.
Can I change employers or projects while my R&D Engineer green card is pending?
Once your I-140 is approved and your priority date is current, AC21 portability lets you change to a same or similar R&D role without restarting the process, provided your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days. Changing employers before I-140 approval generally requires your new employer to restart PERM from scratch, losing the original priority date.
