Verify your credentials meet PERM requirements
PERM's minimum requirements for a Reconstructive Surgeon position are set by the employer's job description, not a federal standard. Confirm your medical degree, residency, and any fellowship training are documented and credentialed through a ECFMG-recognized pathway before your employer files.
Target health systems with PERM filing history
Academic medical centers, large hospital networks, and multispecialty groups file PERM applications far more frequently than private practices. Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data to identify employers who have sponsored reconstructive or plastic surgery roles in recent years.
Understand the EB-2 versus EB-3 classification decision
Reconstructive Surgeon roles typically qualify under EB-2 as advanced-degree professionals, but some employers file under EB-3 to simplify the PERM process. Ask any prospective employer which category they intend to use, since your priority date and wait time depend on it.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Reconstructive Surgeon openings by employers with active EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history. This cuts the time spent approaching practices that have never navigated PERM and focuses your outreach on institutions already familiar with the process.
Negotiate PERM filing into your employment contract
Once you have a job offer, confirm in writing that the employer will initiate PERM within a defined period, typically 90 days after your start date. Reconstructive surgery hiring is competitive, and verbal assurances about sponsorship often go unfulfilled without a contractual commitment.
Check prevailing wage early using OFLC Wage Search
PERM requires your offered salary to meet the DOL prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and geographic area. Run the OFLC Wage Search before accepting any offer to confirm the employer's compensation meets the Level II or Level III wage threshold for your role.

Find Reconstructive Surgeon JobsReconstructive Surgeon Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Reconstructive Surgeon roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Reconstructive Surgeon positions qualify under EB-2 because the role requires a medical degree plus residency training, meeting the advanced-degree standard. Employers may alternatively file under EB-3 for skilled professionals. The classification affects your priority date and estimated green card wait time, so clarify which category your employer intends to use before accepting an offer.
How does green card sponsorship through PERM differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B sponsorship is temporary and subject to an annual lottery cap, while PERM-based green card sponsorship leads to permanent residency with no lottery. The PERM process requires your employer to conduct a supervised recruitment test before USCIS adjudicates the I-140 petition. For most nationalities outside India and China, EB-3 priority dates are current or near-current, meaning the green card timeline can be shorter than multiple H-1B renewal cycles.
How long does the PERM process typically take for a Reconstructive Surgeon position?
PERM labor certification at the DOL currently averages six to twelve months for standard processing, followed by I-140 adjudication at USCIS and adjustment of status or consular processing. The full timeline from PERM filing to green card approval often runs eighteen to thirty-six months for applicants from countries without significant backlog. Priority date movement affects the final stage for nationals of high-demand countries.
Where can I find Reconstructive Surgeon jobs where the employer already sponsors green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search Reconstructive Surgeon openings filtered specifically by employers with EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship history, so you're not guessing which health systems have navigated PERM before. Targeting employers who have already completed PERM filings for similar roles significantly reduces the risk that sponsorship stalls after you accept an offer.
Can a private reconstructive surgery practice sponsor a green card, or does it need to be a hospital?
Any U.S. employer, including a private practice, can sponsor a Reconstructive Surgeon for a green card through PERM. The employer must demonstrate financial ability to pay the prevailing wage and complete the DOL-required recruitment steps. Private practices do it less frequently than hospital systems, so ask directly whether the practice has prior PERM experience and whether they work with an immigration attorney.
