Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer
Document your technical deployment specialization early
Compile evidence that your Forward Deployed Engineer work required field-specific expertise, architecture diagrams, client implementation records, and performance outcomes. PERM audits increasingly scrutinize whether roles genuinely require specialized knowledge beyond general software engineering.
Target companies with active PERM filing history
Search for employers who have previously filed PERM applications for engineering roles with client-facing or deployment components. DOL disclosure data shows which companies routinely sponsor this type of position rather than treating it as a one-off exception.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter Senior Forward Deployed Engineer jobs by employers with verified green card sponsorship history using Migrate Mate. This surfaces roles where PERM sponsorship is an established practice, not a negotiation you have to initiate from scratch.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 classification before your offer
Ask prospective employers whether they intend to file under EB-2 or EB-3 before you sign. EB-2 requires a master's degree or demonstrated equivalent expertise; EB-3 covers professionals with a bachelor's degree. The category affects your wait time if you're from a backlogged country.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier your role will use
PERM filings require your employer to pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your job zone and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check which wage level your responsibilities map to before your offer letter is finalized.
Align your O*NET occupation code with actual duties
PERM applications require a specific occupation code. O*NET profiles for software and systems engineers may not capture the client-deployment scope of a Forward Deployed role. Work with your employer's counsel to select the code that most accurately reflects your day-to-day duties.
Green Card Senior Forward Deployed Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
It can qualify for either, depending on how the employer defines minimum requirements. EB-2 applies when the role requires an advanced degree or the candidate demonstrates equivalent expertise through progressive experience. EB-3 covers positions requiring at least a bachelor's degree. Because Forward Deployed Engineering sits at the intersection of software architecture and enterprise client work, many employers can credibly support either classification.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa is a temporary nonimmigrant status renewed in three-year increments with annual cap exposure; PERM leads to permanent residency with no renewal cycle. The PERM process requires your employer to conduct a formal labor market test and file with DOL before USCIS can approve the I-140 immigrant petition. For most countries outside India and China, EB-3 priority dates are current or near-current, making the overall timeline to a green card shorter than it appears.
How long does the PERM process typically take for a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer?
The PERM labor certification stage currently averages six to eighteen months at DOL, depending on whether the application is selected for audit. After PERM approval, USCIS adjudicates the I-140 petition, which can run three to eight months on standard processing. Applicants from most countries outside India and China can often file for adjustment of status concurrently with the I-140 once a priority date becomes available.
What should I look for in an employer's sponsorship commitment for this role?
Ask specifically whether the company has a policy of sponsoring PERM for this job level, not just H-1B. Some employers sponsor H-1B routinely but require internal approvals or a tenure threshold before initiating PERM. Confirm in writing whether the offer includes green card sponsorship and at which stage it starts. You can use Migrate Mate to identify employers who have actively filed PERM cases for Forward Deployed or similar senior engineering roles.
Can I switch jobs after my I-140 is approved without losing my green card priority date?
Yes, under portability rules established by AC21, you can change employers or roles after your I-140 has been approved for at least 180 days and your adjustment of status application has been pending for the same period. The new role must be in the same or similar occupational classification. A Senior Forward Deployed Engineer moving to a comparable senior technical or solutions engineering role would typically meet this standard, but you should confirm the classification match with your new employer's immigration counsel.
