Verify your degree meets PERM requirements
PERM labor certification ties your sponsorship to a specific job description requiring your exact degree field. A general bachelor's in social work typically satisfies EB-3, while a master's in social work or a clinical credential can support EB-2 for roles requiring advanced practice.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
County human services departments, hospital social work units, and large nonprofit service providers file PERM petitions more consistently than smaller agencies. Cross-reference DOL disclosure data through the OFLC Wage Search to identify which employers have sponsored Social Services Specialist roles by SOC code.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers
Search Migrate Mate to surface Social Services Specialist roles at employers with documented green card sponsorship history, saving you from applying blind to agencies that have never filed PERM. Filter by state and agency type to match your licensure and target geography.
Check your role against the O*NET profile
USCIS and DOL both reference O*NET occupation data when evaluating whether a Social Services Specialist role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Confirm the listed education requirements align with your actual job duties before your employer's attorney drafts the PERM job description.
Ask about the recruitment phase before accepting an offer
PERM requires your employer to run a formal DOL-mandated recruitment process and document that no qualified U.S. worker applied. Ask prospective employers whether they have PERM counsel on retainer and how recently they completed a successful recruitment audit for a similar role.
Account for EB-3 priority date movement in your timeline
For most nationalities, EB-3 priority dates are current or move quickly, meaning your wait between I-140 approval and adjustment of status filing can be short. Check the monthly Visa Bulletin from USCIS to track your category's cutoff date as your case progresses.
Green Card Social Services Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Social Services Specialist roles typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Social Services Specialist positions qualify under EB-3, which covers roles requiring at least a bachelor's degree. If your role requires a master's degree in social work or a clinical licensure that mandates graduate-level education, your employer's attorney may be able to frame the position for EB-2. The final classification depends on how the PERM job description is written and the minimum requirements the employer can honestly justify.
How does the green card PERM process differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
Unlike H-1B visa, green card sponsorship through PERM has no annual lottery and leads to permanent residency rather than a time-limited status. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status can take two to four years combined, compared to H-1B's faster initial authorization. For Social Services Specialist roles, many employers willing to hire on H-1B will also sponsor PERM concurrently if you ask early.
What documentation should I prepare before applying for green card-sponsored social services jobs?
Gather official transcripts verifying your degree field, any clinical licenses such as LCSW or LSW with their state board verification, and letters from past employers confirming job titles and duties. PERM requires the employer to document your qualifications against the certified job description, so gaps between your credentials and the posted requirements can stall certification. Having these documents ready speeds up the attorney intake process once you receive an offer.
Where can I find Social Services Specialist jobs with green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Social Services Specialist roles at employers with green card sponsorship history, filtering out agencies that have never filed PERM. Because PERM-sponsoring employers are a subset of all hiring organizations, a targeted search saves significant time compared to scanning general job listings and asking each employer individually about their immigration policy.
Can my employer start PERM sponsorship while I'm working on an H-1B or OPT?
Yes. Employers can file PERM while you're authorized to work under a different status, and starting early is common practice because PERM establishes your priority date. If you're on H-1B, having an approved I-140 before your sixth year also protects your ability to extend H-1B status beyond the standard six-year limit under AC21 portability rules. Discuss concurrent filing with your employer's immigration counsel as soon as the role is confirmed.
