Green Card Structural Engineer Jobs
Structural engineer roles qualify for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process, which requires employers to document U.S. worker recruitment before filing your I-140 petition. PE licensure and specialized project experience strengthen your profile for advanced-degree EB-2 classification.

Align your credentials with PERM requirements
Gather sealed transcripts, PE license certificates, and project documentation before your employer starts the PERM audit process. Employers must prove the offered role matches your actual duties, so document structural design software skills and project scope precisely.
Target firms with active PERM filing history
Search the DOL's OFLC Foreign Labor Certification Data Center disclosures for structural engineer PERM applications by employer. Firms with multiple certified applications in your specialty, such as bridge, seismic, or high-rise design, are already comfortable with the sponsorship process.
Search green card sponsor jobs on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter structural engineer openings by employers who have sponsored EB-2 or EB-3 green cards before. Targeting verified sponsoring employers cuts the negotiation stage and surfaces roles already built around the PERM pathway.
Clarify EB-2 versus EB-3 classification early
If your role requires a master's degree or equivalent, request EB-2 classification when negotiating your offer letter. EB-2 can move faster for most countries outside India and China, and your PE license plus specialized experience may support an EB-2 advanced-degree filing without additional coursework.
Understand the prevailing wage before accepting offers
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your exact job zone and location. Run your title and county through the OFLC Wage Search before signing any offer, because an underpaid PERM application gets denied regardless of your qualifications.
Time your priority date against the Visa Bulletin
Once USCIS approves your I-140, your priority date locks in your green card queue position. For EB-3 applicants born outside high-backlog countries, dates often move quickly, so file your I-485 adjustment of status as soon as your priority date becomes current.
Green Card Structural Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do structural engineer roles actually qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Yes. Structural engineering is classified as a specialty occupation requiring at minimum a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, which qualifies under EB-3. Roles requiring a master's degree or demonstrating advanced specialization in seismic design, forensic analysis, or complex infrastructure qualify under EB-2. Your employer documents the specific degree requirement during the PERM labor certification stage.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for structural engineers?
H-1B visa is a temporary work visa capped at 65,000 annually and subject to a lottery, so approval is never certain. PERM sponsorship targets lawful permanent residency with no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most nationalities, no lottery, and no expiration once you receive your green card. The PERM process typically runs one to two years longer overall, but the outcome is permanent U.S. residency rather than a temporary status requiring repeated renewal.
What documentation strengthens a structural engineer's PERM application?
Your employer's PERM application must define minimum requirements that match your credentials exactly. Useful supporting documents include your PE license, sealed academic transcripts, project portfolios demonstrating specialized experience, and proof of any required software proficiency such as ETABS, SAP2000, or Revit. Discrepancies between your actual background and the PERM job description are a leading cause of audit requests from DOL.
Where can I find structural engineer jobs where the employer already sponsors green cards?
Migrate Mate lets you search structural engineer openings filtered by employers with confirmed EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship history. Focusing your search this way means you're negotiating with firms that already understand the PERM timeline and have internal processes in place, rather than introducing the idea of sponsorship from scratch during interviews.
Can I switch structural engineering jobs after my I-140 is approved?
Yes, under AC21 portability rules you can change employers after your I-140 is approved and your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days, provided the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. Structural engineering roles generally satisfy this test when the new position involves comparable design and analysis responsibilities, but you should confirm the job duties align before making any move.
