Document your engineering credentials early
Gather your degree transcripts, professional engineering licenses, and any foreign credential evaluations before applying. PERM requires your employer to verify your minimum qualifications meet the role's stated requirements, so gaps discovered late can stall the process.
Target firms with active PERM filing history
Mid-to-large structural and civil engineering firms, construction management companies, and infrastructure consultancies sponsor green cards far more often than boutique practices. Search DOL PERM disclosure data to confirm a firm has filed for similar engineering titles before approaching them.
Understand how EB-2 and EB-3 affect your timeline
If your offer requires only a bachelor's degree, it typically files under EB-3. A role requiring a master's or equivalent specialized experience qualifies under EB-2. Your country of birth, not citizenship, determines your priority date queue and wait time.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Filtering by green card sponsorship history saves months of guesswork. Migrate Mate surfaces Structural Project Engineer roles at employers with documented PERM and I-140 filing history, so your applications go to firms already set up to sponsor.
Negotiate the job offer before PERM recruitment starts
Once your employer begins the PERM recruitment process, the job duties, minimum requirements, and offered wage are locked in by DOL. Clarify title, responsibilities, and whether the prevailing wage from the OFLC Wage Search matches your expected compensation before recruitment ads run.
Request concurrent I-485 filing when your priority date allows
If your priority date is current when your employer files the I-140, you can file your I-485 adjustment of status at the same time. USCIS allows this for eligible applicants, letting you work and travel on advance parole while your green card is adjudicated.
Green Card Structural Project Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Structural Project Engineer roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Both categories apply depending on how the employer defines the position. EB-3 covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. EB-2 applies when the position requires a master's degree or equivalent, or when a candidate pursues a National Interest Waiver based on specialized professional contributions. Your employer's job description and the PERM application lock in the category.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa is temporary status, capped annually, and subject to a lottery for most candidates. Employment-based green card sponsorship through PERM leads to permanent residency with no annual cap at the EB-3 level for many countries. The tradeoff is time: PERM, I-140, and adjustment of status typically take two to four years for most nationalities, longer for applicants born in India or China where priority date backlogs apply.
What does the PERM process look like for a structural engineering role?
Your employer files a prevailing wage request with DOL, runs a recruitment campaign to demonstrate no qualified U.S. worker is available, then submits the PERM application to DOL for certification. Once certified, they file an I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS. The engineering-specific detail is that your degree field and experience must match the job's stated minimum requirements exactly as DOL reviewed them.
How do I find employers who will sponsor a green card for this position?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Structural Project Engineer openings by employers with documented green card sponsorship history, saving you from applying to firms that have never filed a PERM petition. Targeting firms with established PERM filing patterns in structural, civil, or infrastructure engineering significantly shortens the path from offer to initiated sponsorship.
Can I switch employers after my green card sponsorship has started?
Job portability under AC21 lets you change to a same or similar occupational role after your I-140 is approved and your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days. Structural engineering roles are generally portable to similar positions within civil and structural engineering. Switching employers before the I-140 is approved typically requires restarting PERM from the beginning with the new employer.
