Academic Surgical Oncologist Opportunity in Southern California
Assistant/Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology
Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group
Position Overview:
The Department of Surgery at Loma Linda University School of Medicine is seeking a fellowship trained surgical oncologist to join our team for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Surgery. Patients with a wide variety of complex general surgical oncology conditions are managed in the Loma Linda University Cancer Center and its network of affiliated clinics with a full complement of multidisciplinary specialists. The applicant must have a commitment to research and education and will work closely with medical students, residents, and fellows. The Department of Surgery currently trains one Complex General Surgical Oncology fellow per year and one International Surgical Oncology fellow per year. The Division of Surgical Oncology includes Complex General and Breast Surgical Oncology faculty in a Commission on Cancer accredited academic cancer program. The Division services a variety of practice settings, including the flagship tertiary academic medical center moving toward NCI designation, as well as affiliated community cancer programs and satellite clinics serving San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
The current need is for a surgeon based at the main campus in Loma Linda to also provide a portion of their professional services in Apple Valley, CA, at a distance of 48 miles. This assignment, which will be co-held with the Division Chief, is designed to be an equitable sharing in the total portfolio of the Division, with the rest of the faculty also providing services at similar or greater distances and frequencies, helping to reduce access barriers and disparities in this underserved region.
Across all settings, surgeons have access to nine robotic platforms (both dv5 and da Vinci Xi), which the faculty regularly use for GI, endocrine, and HPB resections, including Whipple. The Division is also home to programmatic capabilities in managing peritoneal surface malignancy, providing hepatic arterial infusion therapy, and participating in clinical trials. These programs are further supported by advanced capabilities within other specialties such as Advanced Endoscopy and Interventional Radiology. With a focus on education, the Division offers one of five ACGME accredited Complex General Surgical Oncology fellowships in California and is one of only four institutions west of the Mississippi River with ACGME training programs in the “big three” of cancer—surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. The Division is also home to one of the very few programs in the United States offering regular, formal training in surgical oncology to international candidates for the mitigation of surgical oncology workforce deficiencies in low- and middle-income countries. There are ample leadership opportunities in this Division. Candidates must have appropriate board certification and licensure. Women and underrepresented surgeons are encouraged to apply.
The Department of Surgery Commitment is to enable surgical faculty and trainees to reach their highest professional and academic potential while serving the Loma Linda University mission to make people whole. Our vision is to create global surgical leaders in whole person care, education, and research. Faculty with interests in global surgery can participate in the University’s Center for Global Surgery.
Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group is affiliated with Loma Linda University Health and School of Medicine, with the mission to deliver whole person care at a world-class level of clinical excellence. The state-of-the-art Troesh Medical Campus serves as the largest tertiary referral source in both Riverside and San Bernardino counties with a surrounding population approaching 5 million. Document your subspecialty training for PERM
PERM job requirements must match your actual credentials. Compile fellowship completion letters, board certification documentation, and any tumor-board or procedural case logs before your employer drafts the job description to avoid a mismatch that delays certification.
Target NCI-designated cancer centers first
NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers have dedicated HR infrastructure for sponsoring foreign surgical oncologists and file PERM petitions regularly. Prioritizing these institutions shortens the gap between offer and petition initiation compared to community hospital settings.
Verify prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up wage levels for surgical oncologists in your target city before finalizing your offer letter so you can negotiate from an informed position.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter surgical oncologist openings by employers with active PERM and I-140 filing history using Migrate Mate. This surfaces institutions that have sponsored roles at your credential level before, cutting time spent on employers unfamiliar with the EB-2 or EB-3 process.
Understand how EB-2 NIW applies to your research
If you conduct oncology research with national impact, a National Interest Waiver petition lets you self-petition under EB-2 without employer PERM sponsorship. USCIS evaluates your publication record, clinical innovation, and field significance under this pathway.
Plan for concurrent I-485 filing if your priority date allows
Once your employer files the I-140, check the USCIS Visa Bulletin monthly. Many EB-2 and EB-3 applicants from non-backlogged countries can file adjustment of status concurrently, letting you maintain work authorization without renewing H-1B visa or J-1 visa status separately.
Green Card Surgical Oncologist: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Surgical Oncologist roles qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Surgical oncologist positions qualify for both categories. EB-2 applies when the role requires an advanced degree, which fellowship-trained surgeons typically hold, and EB-3 covers positions that require at least a bachelor's degree plus professional licensure. Most academic and hospital employers petition under EB-2, since the role's minimum qualification is a medical degree followed by residency and fellowship training.
How does the PERM green card process differ from H-1B sponsorship for surgeons?
PERM sponsorship leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status. Unlike H-1B, there is no annual lottery for EB-2 or EB-3 petitions, and approval authorizes you to live and work in the United States permanently. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification through DOL, followed by I-140 filing with USCIS, typically takes one to three years before you can file for adjustment of status, depending on your country of birth and current visa bulletin dates.
Which employers sponsor green cards for surgical oncologists most reliably?
NCI-designated cancer centers, academic medical centers affiliated with major research universities, and large regional health systems are the most consistent sponsors. These institutions have established immigration teams familiar with PERM requirements for surgical subspecialists. You can use Migrate Mate to filter surgical oncologist openings specifically by employers with documented PERM and I-140 filing history, so you're not relying on self-reported sponsorship claims in job postings.
Can a Surgical Oncologist self-petition without an employer through EB-2 NIW?
Yes. The EB-2 National Interest Waiver allows surgeons to petition USCIS without employer sponsorship or PERM labor certification if their work serves the national interest. For surgical oncologists, USCIS looks at research output, clinical innovation, and the impact of your work on underserved populations or cancer outcomes. This pathway suits surgeons with a significant publication record or involvement in clinical trials, since USCIS evaluates both merit and national benefit under the Dhanasar framework.
What happens to my green card petition if I change employers before the I-485 is approved?
If your I-140 has been approved for 180 days or more and your I-485 is pending, you can port to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational classification under AC21 portability rules. For surgical oncologists, a move between two surgical oncology positions at different institutions generally qualifies. Notify USCIS of the job change and retain documentation showing the roles are substantially similar to preserve your priority date and petition.
