Green Card Welder Jobs
Welder roles in manufacturing, construction, and infrastructure can qualify for EB-3 skilled worker sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process. Employers document U.S. worker unavailability, file an I-140 petition, and sponsor you for permanent residency. Priority dates, country of birth, and union apprenticeship credentials all affect your timeline and eligibility.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Green Card Sponsorship as a Welder
Verify your credentials meet EB-3 requirements
EB-3 skilled worker eligibility requires at least two years of training or experience. Gather welding certifications, apprenticeship completion records, and AWS or ASME credentials before applying. Employers filing PERM must document that your qualifications match the job requirements exactly.
Target employers with active PERM filing history
Search OFLC disclosure data for employers who have filed PERM applications for welder roles. Fabrication shops, shipyards, and pipeline contractors with repeat filings are already familiar with the sponsorship process and less likely to withdraw mid-application.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Migrate Mate filters job listings by green card sponsorship history, so you can focus on Welder roles at companies that have completed PERM filings before. This cuts out employers who express interest but lack the process experience to follow through.
Understand how union membership affects your PERM case
If the employer is a union shop, DOL requires that the prevailing wage meet the union's collectively bargained rate. Confirm your welding classification, journeyman or apprentice, maps to the correct DOL wage level before the employer submits the PERM application.
Cross-check offered wages against OFLC Wage Search
DOL requires PERM employers to pay at least the prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Run your job title and ZIP code through OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer to confirm the stated salary meets DOL's minimum threshold.
File I-485 concurrently if your priority date is current
Once your employer's I-140 is approved and your priority date is current in the Visa Bulletin, you can file your adjustment of status application with USCIS without waiting. Concurrent filing is only available inside the U.S., so confirm your current status permits it.
Green Card Welder: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Welder role qualify for EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Yes. Welding is classified as a skilled occupation under EB-3 because it requires at least two years of training or documented work experience. Employers must complete PERM labor certification with the DOL before filing an I-140 petition with USCIS. Roles in shipbuilding, structural steel, and pipeline construction are among the most commonly sponsored welder positions.
How does EB-3 green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for a Welder?
H-1B visa requires a bachelor's degree in a specialty occupation, which excludes most welding roles. EB-3 covers skilled trades with two or more years of training or experience, making it the correct employment-based category for welders. Unlike H-1B, there is no annual lottery for EB-3. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification and I-140 approval can take one to three years before you reach adjustment of status.
How long does the PERM process typically take for a Welder job?
The full sequence, including PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status, typically runs two to four years for applicants born in countries without significant visa backlogs. PERM alone averages around 12 to 18 months at DOL, and processing times shift based on audits and DOL staffing. Your country of birth determines your priority date queue in the Visa Bulletin, which can extend the timeline further.
Where can I find Welder jobs that offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Welder roles at employers with documented green card sponsorship history, filtered by location and EB category. Targeting companies that have completed prior PERM filings for similar roles reduces the risk of pursuing employers who are unfamiliar with the process or unlikely to commit to multi-year sponsorship timelines.
Can my employer sponsor me for an EB-2 instead of EB-3 as a Welder?
EB-2 requires either an advanced degree or a position that demonstrably requires one, which most welding roles do not meet. In rare cases, a highly specialized welding position, such as nuclear or aerospace applications requiring an engineering degree, could support an EB-2 filing. For the vast majority of welding jobs, EB-3 skilled worker is the correct and only viable employment-based green card category.
