Match your credentials to PERM wage levels
DOL assigns prevailing wage tiers to elevator mechanic roles based on experience and supervisory duties. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm which level matches your background before applying, so your offer letter aligns with what PERM requires.
Target union signatory contractors first
IBEW and NEIEP-affiliated contractors already operate within structured wage agreements that satisfy DOL prevailing wage requirements. These employers are familiar with multi-year sponsorship timelines and are less likely to withdraw a petition mid-process.
Verify your apprenticeship credits transfer correctly
Foreign apprenticeship hours don't automatically satisfy state licensing boards or USCIS experience requirements. Get a credential evaluation that maps your completed hours to U.S. Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee standards before an employer files your labor certification.
Ask employers about concurrent I-140 and I-485 filing
If a visa number is immediately available for your country of birth and category, you can file the I-140 and I-485 simultaneously, cutting months off your wait. Confirm your employer's attorney knows whether concurrent filing applies to your situation at the offer stage.
Search green card sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by elevator mechanic roles where employers have active PERM and I-140 filing history. Migrate Mate surfaces this data so you spend time applying to contractors already committed to permanent sponsorship, not those unfamiliar with the process.
Secure your state license before PERM is filed
Most states require a journeyman or mechanic license as a minimum job requirement. If your employer lists licensure as a requirement in the PERM job description, you must already hold it. Unlicensed candidates risk the labor certification being denied or requiring a restart.

Find Elevator Mechanic JobsElevator Mechanic Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an elevator mechanic role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship?
Most elevator mechanic positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers, since the role typically requires a multi-year apprenticeship rather than a bachelor's degree. EB-2 sponsorship is possible if you hold an advanced degree and the employer structures the position to require one, but that's uncommon for field mechanic roles. Your employer's attorney will determine the correct category based on the job description and your credentials.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B for elevator mechanics?
H-1B requires a specialty occupation tied to a bachelor's degree, which elevator mechanic roles rarely satisfy, so most workers in this trade cannot use that visa. EB-3 green card sponsorship has no annual lottery and leads to permanent residency rather than a temporary status. The tradeoff is timeline: PERM labor certification, I-140 approval, and adjustment of status together can take two to four years depending on your country of birth and USCIS processing.
What does the PERM labor certification process require from the employer?
The employer must conduct a formal recruitment campaign to demonstrate no qualified U.S. worker is available for the position. This includes job postings, newspaper ads, and internal notices meeting DOL requirements. The employer then files an ETA Form 9089 with DOL. Only after PERM is certified can the employer file the I-140 immigrant petition with USCIS on your behalf.
How do I find elevator mechanic employers who actively sponsor green cards?
Search for employers with documented PERM and I-140 filing history in this trade. Migrate Mate lets you filter elevator mechanic job listings by employers with active sponsorship records, so you can focus on contractors who already understand the process and are willing to commit to the multi-year timeline permanent sponsorship requires.
Can I switch employers after my I-140 is approved?
Yes, under AC21 portability rules you can change to a same or similar occupation once your I-140 has been approved and your I-485 has been pending for at least 180 days. Elevator mechanic roles are classified under a specific O*NET occupation code, so a new employer's position must fall within the same occupational category to preserve your priority date and I-140 approval.
