Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an Admissions Counselor
Verify your degree field matches the role
Admissions Counselor petitions get RFEs when the degree field is too broad. A degree in education, counseling, psychology, or communications strengthens the specialty occupation argument more than a general business or liberal arts degree.
Target universities with cap-exempt status
Colleges and universities classified as nonprofit research institutions are H-1B cap-exempt, meaning your employer can file any time of year without waiting for the April lottery. Confirm the institution's cap-exempt status with HR before accepting an offer.
Search LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter Admissions Counselor roles by employers who have filed H-1B Labor Condition Applications. Migrate Mate surfaces this DOL filing data so you can target institutions with active sponsorship history before applying.
Benchmark your offered wage using OFLC Wage Search
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run OFLC Wage Search for the Admissions Counselors occupation code before negotiating your offer to confirm compliance.
Ask HR about the I-129 filing timeline at offer stage
For cap-subject employers, H-1B registration opens in March and employment can't begin before October 1. Ask HR whether they file premium processing and whether your start date aligns with the cap year, before you resign from a current role.
Document your advising credentials before filing
USCIS scrutinizes Admissions Counselor petitions more than technical roles. Gather official transcripts, degree equivalency evaluations for foreign credentials, and any professional certifications in student advising or enrollment management before your employer files I-129.

Find Admissions Counselor JobsAdmissions Counselor H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Admissions Counselor role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it's not automatic. USCIS requires that the position normally demands a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. An Admissions Counselor role at an accredited college or university, with job duties tied to a relevant field like education, counseling, or communications, typically meets the specialty occupation standard. Generic advising roles that accept any degree are more likely to receive an RFE.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for Admissions Counselors?
Accredited colleges, universities, and nonprofit research institutions are the most active sponsors. Many are cap-exempt, which means they can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the annual lottery. Private secondary schools and for-profit education companies can also sponsor, but they are cap-subject and must go through the April registration process. Use Migrate Mate to identify institutions with verified LCA filing history for this role.
What happens to my H-1B status if I move from one college to another?
Your new employer must file a new H-1B petition before you start working. Under H-1B portability rules, if you're transferring to another cap-exempt institution, your new employer can file at any time and you can begin work once the petition is received by USCIS, not just approved. Keep your pay stubs and employment records from the prior employer to document continuous H-1B status.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement apply to Admissions Counselor positions?
Your employer must certify on the Labor Condition Application that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for the Admissions Counselors SOC code in your specific work location. The DOL sets two wage levels for most positions. You can verify the applicable prevailing wage yourself using OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer, so you know whether the compensation a school is offering is LCA-compliant.
Can I work as an Admissions Counselor at multiple campus locations on one H-1B?
Working at a location not covered by your LCA requires an amended petition. If your role involves travel to recruiting events or temporary assignments at branch campuses, your employer should include those worksite locations in the LCA or file an amended I-129 before you begin working there regularly. Short-term placements under 30 days in a year have a limited exception, but consult your employer's immigration counsel before assuming it applies.
