- Graduate degree in Art History in an area of strength aligned with our collections (or a qualification in Museum Studies), plus curatorial expertise, enthusiasm, and a passion for all areas of museum work.

- Excellent literacy skills, outstanding verbal communication; able to write and speak in academic environments as well as in accessible language and formats that all visitors can access.
- Proven experience of working in teams and partnering with colleagues and external bodies to achieve shared goals and navigate challenges; your current co-workers are likely to describe you as an excellent colleague and collaborator.

Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to curatorial work. A general humanities degree may draw an RFE, so gather transcripts and any credential evaluations showing coursework in collections management, conservation, or art history.
Target institutions with cap-exempt filing history
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with research institutions, and federally funded museums can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. These employers can hire you at any time of year without waiting for the April lottery window.
Search H-1B filing history before applying
Use Migrate Mate to filter Curator openings by employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings. This tells you which institutions have sponsored the role before, so you're not guessing about sponsorship willingness during interviews.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Run your offer against the OFLC Wage Search using the SOC code for Curators. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the prevailing wage for your location and level, so knowing the floor before negotiation protects you from a filing problem later.
Document your O*NET occupation code in your portfolio
Curators map to a specific O*NET classification that USCIS uses to assess specialty occupation status. Referencing this code when explaining your role to HR signals that your position meets the degree-requirement threshold and simplifies the employer's LCA preparation.
Clarify who covers filing fees before signing
USCIS prohibits employers from passing certain mandatory H-1B fees to you as the beneficiary. Confirm in writing which fees your employer covers before your offer letter is finalized, since this affects your net cost and the petition's compliance.

Find Curator JobsCurator H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Curator roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations?
Yes, Curator positions typically qualify when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as museum studies, art history, archaeology, or archival science. USCIS evaluates the specific job duties and the degree requirement stated in the job description, so the employer's posting and internal job analysis both matter for establishing specialty occupation status.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor H-1B visas for Curators?
Universities, federally funded research museums, Smithsonian Institution affiliates, and large natural history or art museums have the strongest H-1B filing track records for curatorial roles. Many of these institutions are cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round rather than competing in the annual lottery. You can filter for employers with verified filing history on Migrate Mate.
Can a nonprofit museum sponsor an H-1B for a Curator?
Yes, nonprofit museums that qualify as cap-exempt organizations under INA Section 214(g)(5) can file H-1B petitions at any time without using a lottery slot. Eligibility depends on the institution's affiliation with a higher education institution or whether it meets the nonprofit research organization criteria that USCIS recognizes, so the museum's legal counsel typically confirms exempt status before filing.
What happens to my H-1B status if the museum's grant funding ends?
Your H-1B status is tied to your employer and the approved petition, not to a specific funding source. If your position is eliminated due to budget cuts, your employer must notify USCIS and pay your return transportation costs. You then have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or depart the United States.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage apply to Curator roles?
Your employer must certify on the LCA that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for Curators in your geographic area, as determined by DOL wage data. The wage level assigned, from Level 1 through Level 4, reflects experience and complexity of duties. You can verify the applicable prevailing wage for your location and role level using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
