H-1B Visa Architect Jobs
Architect roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require at least a bachelor's degree in architecture or a related field. Many firms sponsor H-1B visas for licensed and unlicensed architects, but cap-subject slots are limited to 85,000 annually, so targeting employers with active LCA filing history improves your odds.

Verify your licensure transfers across states
Your architecture license doesn't automatically apply in every state. Confirm your home country credentials are accepted by NCARB before your employer files the LCA, since the job location's state licensing board determines whether you meet the specialty occupation standard.
Check LCA filings by occupation code
Architect roles file under SOC code 17-1011. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by that code and see which firms have certified LCAs for architect positions, so you're only targeting companies with a documented H-1B filing track record.
Request prevailing wage documentation before signing
Your employer must pay the prevailing wage for your specific role and work location. Look up the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer, and confirm your offer meets at least Level I for entry roles or Level II for mid-level positions.
Distinguish design roles from project management roles
USCIS scrutinizes architect petitions where the job duties overlap heavily with general project management. Your offer letter should emphasize design, specification writing, and technical oversight, not budget tracking or client relations, to strengthen the specialty occupation argument.
File during the April cap window with premium processing
H-1B cap registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're selected, ask your employer to add premium processing so USCIS adjudicates the I-129 within 15 business days, keeping your start date on track.
Use O*NET to document your role's degree requirement
Specialty occupation status depends on proving the role normally requires a specific bachelor's degree. Pull the O*NET profile for Architects to show USCIS that the occupation's standard entry requirement is a degree in architecture, strengthening your petition against an RFE.

Find Architect JobsArchitect H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an architect role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Architecture meets the specialty occupation definition because entry into the field normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in architecture or a directly related discipline. USCIS treats the degree-to-job alignment as straightforward for licensed architects, though you should ensure your offer letter specifies design and technical duties rather than general project coordination, which carries more scrutiny.
Do I need a U.S. architecture license for an employer to sponsor my H-1B?
Not necessarily at the petition stage. USCIS can approve an H-1B for an architect without a U.S. license if your foreign degree and credentials establish specialty occupation. However, some employers require NCARB recognition or state licensure before extending an offer, so confirming the firm's internal requirements early avoids surprises after selection.
How do I find architecture firms that sponsor H-1B visas?
Search Migrate Mate to browse architecture employers with verified LCA filing history under SOC code 17-1011. Firms that have filed LCAs for architect positions have already gone through the DOL certification process and are more likely to have an established sponsorship workflow, which speeds up the employer's timeline after you receive an offer.
What happens to my H-1B status if my sponsoring architecture firm loses a major contract?
Your H-1B status is tied to the sponsoring employer, not the project. If the firm terminates your employment, USCIS gives you a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, transfer your H-1B to another employer, or depart. A new architecture firm can file an H-1B transfer immediately, allowing you to start work as soon as the petition is received by USCIS.
Can a small or boutique architecture firm sponsor an H-1B?
Yes. Firm size doesn't determine H-1B eligibility. Small studios and boutique practices can sponsor H-1B petitions as long as they have a legitimate employer-employee relationship and can pay the prevailing wage for your role and location. The DOL's LCA process applies equally to firms of any size, and USCIS evaluates the petition on the job's qualifying duties, not the employer's headcount.
