Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a UX Product Designer
Verify your degree maps to the role
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to UX Product Design. A degree in graphic design, cognitive science, or HCI typically qualifies. A general business degree usually doesn't without strong coursework evidence.
Search LCA filings for design roles
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Applications by SOC code 15-1255 (Web and Digital Interface Designers). Employers with recent certified LCAs for that code have an active H-1B sponsorship track record.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Search UX Product Designer roles on Migrate Mate to see employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history filtered by occupation code, so you're applying to companies that have already sponsored the role, not guessing.
Negotiate offer timing around the cap deadline
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed by early April for an October 1 start. If you receive an offer in late spring or summer, your employer can't file until the next cycle, meaning you'd wait up to 18 months to start.
Confirm your employer files the LCA correctly
Your employer's LCA must list the actual work location, not just headquarters. If you'll work remotely or at a client site, DOL requires a separate LCA posting for each worksite where you spend more than 40 hours in a year.
Document your UX portfolio as evidence of specialty
USCIS sometimes issues RFEs questioning whether UX design qualifies as a specialty occupation. A portfolio demonstrating systems-level design work tied to your degree field strengthens the petition and reduces RFE risk.
H-1B Visa UX Product Designer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a UX Product Designer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B?
Yes, UX Product Designer roles qualify when the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as human-computer interaction, interaction design, or cognitive science. Employers must document in the H-1B petition that the role requires that specific degree, not just any bachelor's degree, which is the distinction USCIS scrutinizes most closely for design titles.
How do I find employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas for UX designers?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history filtered by occupation code for UX and digital interface design roles. This tells you which companies have sponsored the role before, not just which ones list it as a perk in job postings.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new UX design role at a different employer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for USCIS approval, provided you're currently in valid H-1B status and the new role also qualifies as a specialty occupation. Your new employer must still file a certified LCA before submitting the I-129 transfer petition.
What SOC code applies to UX Product Designer roles on the LCA?
Most UX Product Designer roles are classified under SOC code 15-1255, Web and Digital Interface Designers, per O*NET. Some employers file under 27-1021 (Commercial and Industrial Designers) depending on the scope of the role. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level your employer must certify on the LCA, so confirming the correct code protects you if there's ever a DOL audit.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer does a layoff or restructuring?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new H-1B sponsor, change to another valid status, or depart the U.S. During that window, a new employer can file an H-1B transfer petition. Starting work before USCIS receipts the new petition is not permitted, so timing the transition carefully matters.
