Verify your SOC code before applying
Senior Product Design Manager roles typically fall under SOC 27-1021 (Commercial and Industrial Designers) or 11-9199. Confirm your target employers used the right code on past LCAs, a mismatch can trigger an RFE on specialty occupation grounds.
Check LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Search DOL Labor Condition Application records by job title and employer on Migrate Mate to see which companies have actively sponsored this role. Employers with recent filings under a matching SOC code are far more likely to extend an offer with H-1B sponsorship.
Document your design leadership scope clearly
USCIS scrutinizes manager-level design roles. Your resume and employer support letter should detail the specialized degree requirements for the position, not just team size. Titles with 'manager' that don't require a specific design degree are more vulnerable to specialty occupation denials.
Target companies enrolled in E-Verify
E-Verify enrollment is required for STEM OPT employers and federal contractors, making these companies more familiar with work authorization processes. For H-1B holders, E-Verify enrollment signals an employer already has the compliance infrastructure to file quickly after an offer.
Request premium processing before your start date
USCIS premium processing guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication window. For a Senior Product Design Manager role with a cap-subject petition, ask your employer to file premium processing if your start date is within three months of the October 1 effective date.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your prevailing wage
Look up the DOL prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, and knowing the threshold protects you from underpayment that could jeopardize your petition.
H-1B Visa Senior Product Design Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Product Design Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer can demonstrate the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as industrial design, human-computer interaction, or a closely related discipline. Generic management experience without a specific degree requirement weakens the specialty occupation argument, so the job description and support letter both matter during adjudication.
How do I find employers that have sponsored H-1B visas for this role before?
Migrate Mate surfaces verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing data by job title and employer, so you can see which companies have already certified LCAs for Senior Product Design Manager or similar design leadership roles. Filtering by recent filings and your target metro area gives you a practical shortlist of employers already familiar with the sponsorship process.
Can my employer file my H-1B petition while I'm on OPT or STEM OPT extension?
Yes. If you're currently authorized under OPT or a STEM OPT extension, your employer can file your cap-subject H-1B petition during the April registration window for an October 1 start. If your STEM OPT expires before October 1, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically once the I-129 is filed, as long as it's filed before your EAD expires.
Is a Senior Product Design Manager role at risk of an H-1B Request for Evidence?
Manager-level design titles carry higher RFE risk than individual contributor roles because USCIS sometimes questions whether supervisory duties displace the specialized degree requirement. An employer support letter that explains the technical design expertise required of the manager, not just team oversight responsibilities, is the most effective way to reduce that risk at the petition stage.
What happens to my H-1B status if I change employers after my petition is approved?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you transfer your status to a new employer as long as the new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before your current authorized period ends and the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For a Senior Product Design Manager, moving to a comparable design leadership role at another company generally qualifies, but the new employer still needs to file a certified LCA first.
