INTRODUCTION
EvenUp is on a mission to close the justice gap using technology and AI. We empower personal injury lawyers and victims to get the justice they deserve. Our products enable law firms to secure faster settlements, higher payouts, and better outcomes for victims injured through no fault of their own in vehicle collisions, accidents, natural disasters, and more.
We are one of the fastest-growing vertical SaaS companies in history, and we are just getting started. EvenUp is backed by top VCs, including Bessemer Venture Partners, Bain Capital Ventures, SignalFire, and Lightspeed. We are looking to expand our team with talented, driven, and collaborative individuals who seek to have a lasting impact.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
We’re looking for a Director of Product Design to help shape the future of EvenUp’s product design practice. Reporting to the Head of Design, you’ll lead a small team of embedded product designers while also contributing hands-on to high-impact projects. This is a true player-coach role, with about half your time spent mentoring and growing the team and the other half leading design for strategic initiatives in close partnership with engineering, product, and AI.
This role offers broad scope and strategic influence across a modular, fast-evolving platform. You’ll support work spanning AI tools and workflow infrastructure, helping to architect cohesive, user-centered experiences in a technically complex space. It’s an opportunity to shape foundational design systems, build team culture, and make a lasting impact on the legal tech ecosystem we’re helping to define.
This is a hybrid role with the expectation of working at least 3 days a week from one of our office hubs in San Francisco or Toronto.
What you'll do:
- Lead and support a team of 4+ product designers, investing in their growth, performance, and career development.
- Drive hiring for open roles on your team, partnering with recruiting and design leadership to scale our design practice.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and data teams to define strategy, scope product opportunities, and ship high-quality solutions.
- Balance management responsibilities with hands-on design work—taking ownership of critical projects that contribute directly to business goals.
- Champion design excellence and foster a collaborative, feedback-rich design culture grounded in user-centered thinking and high standards of execution.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years of experience in software product design
- 5+ years of experience in managing other designers.
- A track record of designing impactful B2B workflow tools for complex, specialized users—experience with internal tooling and/or AI interfaces is a strong plus.
- Proven ability to lead and scale a team, including hiring and developing talent.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; experience working cross-functionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to drive clarity in ambiguous problem spaces and ship high-quality work at speed.
BENEFITS & PERKS
As part of our total rewards package, we offer attractive benefits and perks to our employees, including:
- Choice of medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for you and your family.
- Additional insurance coverage options for life, accident, or critical illness.
- Flexible paid time off, sick leave, short-term and long-term disability.
- 10 US observed holidays, and Canadian statutory holidays by province.
- A home office stipend.
- 401(k) for US-based employees and RRSP for Canada-based employees.
- Paid parental leave.
- A local in-person meet-up program.
- Hubs in San Francisco and Toronto.
(Please note the above benefits & perks are for full-time employees)

Document your design leadership portfolio formally
Your USCIS petition needs evidence that your role requires theoretical and practical application of design principles at a bachelor's level or above. Compile case studies showing cross-functional leadership, systems thinking, and measurable product outcomes before you start applying.
Filter employers by LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Not every company that wants a design leader has H-1B infrastructure in place. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for design and product roles, so you target companies already set up to sponsor.
Verify the prevailing wage level before accepting offers
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Run your job title through the OFLC Wage Search to understand which wage level your responsibilities map to before you negotiate, since a Level IV designation changes the floor significantly.
Check O*NET to anchor your specialty occupation argument
USCIS scrutinizes whether a Director of Product Design genuinely requires a specific degree field. The O*NET occupation profile for Art Directors and User Experience Designers documents the theoretical knowledge requirements that support a specialty occupation determination for this role.
Negotiate premium processing into your offer timeline
Design leadership hiring cycles often move fast, but standard H-1B processing can take months. Ask whether the employer will file with premium processing so USCIS adjudicates the petition within 15 business days, keeping your start date aligned with the team's hiring plan.
Understand the cap-exempt employer advantage for this role
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without lottery risk. If you're open to in-house design leadership at a qualifying institution, cap-exempt status removes the annual April registration dependency entirely.
H-1B Visa Director Of Product Design: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Director of Product Design role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer's job requirements specify a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as interaction design, human-computer interaction, industrial design, or a closely aligned discipline. Generalist management roles where any degree qualifies are harder to support. Your petition should document that the specific theoretical knowledge of design is necessary to perform the role, not just experience or general business acumen.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for this role?
Technology companies, SaaS platforms, fintech firms, and large consumer product companies file the most H-1B Labor Condition Applications for senior design roles. Companies with dedicated design orgs and established HR legal teams tend to have smoother sponsorship processes than early-stage startups, which may lack immigration infrastructure. You can browse employers with active H-1B filing histories for design and product roles on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B lottery affect hiring timelines for this position?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions require registration in March for an October 1 start date. If you're already in valid H-1B status with another employer, a new sponsor can file a transfer petition year-round outside the lottery. If you're on OPT or another status, the lottery timeline is a real constraint, and some employers will only proceed if you have an existing H-1B to transfer.
Can my employer transfer my H-1B if I change companies mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed with USCIS, without waiting for approval, provided you've maintained valid status and the petition is non-frivolous. The new employer must file a new Labor Condition Application with DOL and submit an I-129 petition. Your six-year H-1B clock continues; no new lottery is required.
What should I look for when evaluating an employer's ability to sponsor this role?
Look for employers with a history of filing H-1B petitions for product and design roles specifically, not just engineering. Companies with dedicated immigration legal counsel and established HR processes handle petitions faster and with fewer complications. It's also worth confirming the role is structured as a direct hire rather than through a staffing agency, since placement arrangements can complicate the specialty occupation argument for a design leadership position.
