H-1B Visa Linux Engineer Jobs
Linux Engineer roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Employers file an LCA with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and the annual H-1B visa cap with a lottery applies unless your employer is cap-exempt.

Who We Are
Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, privacy-sensitive AI-powered platform that includes solutions for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management.
We've got serious momentum in the market: more than 30,000 customers (including 100+ of the Fortune 500), a $5.8B valuation, more than $1 billion in annualized bookings, and backing from CapitalG, Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst, Felicis Ventures, Next47 and more. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Linux Engineer
Map your degree to Linux Engineer SOC codes
USCIS evaluates whether your degree field directly relates to the role. Pull the O*NET profile for Systems Software Engineers or Network and Computer Systems Administrators to confirm which SOC codes align with your specific Linux duties before employers file.
Target cap-exempt employers for faster H-1B filing
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government entities can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery cap year-round. Linux Engineers placed at these organizations through qualifying arrangements may also qualify for cap-exempt status.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter for Linux Engineer roles at employers with verified H-1B LCA filings through Migrate Mate. Prioritizing employers with consistent filing history shortens your research phase and surfaces roles where sponsorship is already built into the hiring process.
Check prevailing wage levels before negotiating offers
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your role, location, and experience level. Run your job title and metro area through the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer to confirm the posted salary meets Level I through IV thresholds.
Document Linux certifications as specialty occupation evidence
Red Hat Certified Engineer, Linux Foundation certifications, and equivalent credentials strengthen the specialty occupation argument in your I-129 petition. Gather certificates, transcripts, and any employer attestations showing a degree-level requirement for the specific Linux systems work you'll perform.
Time contract-to-hire roles against H-1B registration windows
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for the following fiscal year starting October 1. If you're on OPT in a contract or C2C Linux role, confirm your permanent employer can file before your OPT or cap-gap authorization expires.
H-1B Visa Linux Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Linux Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, information technology, or electrical engineering. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field can face RFEs from USCIS. Your employer's job description should specify the degree field requirement explicitly, and the O*NET profile for the role supports the specialty occupation argument.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Linux Engineers most consistently?
Cloud infrastructure companies, financial services firms, defense contractors, and enterprise technology vendors with dedicated Linux or DevOps teams file H-1B petitions regularly for these roles. Employers enrolled in E-Verify and those with existing Linux infrastructure headcount are practical starting points. Browse verified H-1B filing history by employer and role on Migrate Mate to narrow your search.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement apply to Linux Engineer positions?
DOL requires your employer to certify on the LCA that your wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for the occupation, experience level, and geographic area. Linux Engineers classified under Systems Software Engineers typically fall into Level II or Level III wage tiers depending on seniority. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up current prevailing wage rates for your specific metro area before evaluating any offer.
Can a Linux Engineer change employers mid-H-1B without losing status?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once the new I-129 petition is filed and receipted, as long as your previous H-1B was approved, you're in valid status, and you're moving to a same or similar occupational classification. Linux Engineer roles typically stay within the same SOC group, which supports a portability argument, but your new employer must still file a new LCA and petition.
Does Linux certification or experience substitute for a bachelor's degree on an H-1B petition?
USCIS allows three years of specialized work experience to substitute for one year of formal education toward the equivalent of a four-year degree. For a Linux Engineer without a bachelor's degree, you'd generally need at least 12 years of directly relevant experience. Professional certifications like Red Hat Certified Engineer can support the equivalency argument but don't replace the experience-to-education calculation USCIS applies.
