Match your degree to your backend stack
USCIS evaluates whether your specific degree field supports your job duties. A computer science or software engineering degree maps cleanly to backend roles, but an unrelated degree may require a credential evaluation and a detailed employer letter explaining the connection.
Use OFLC Wage Search before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 15-1252 before your offer conversation so you understand the floor your employer is legally required to meet.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing history
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with higher education, and certain research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. Backend engineers at these institutions skip the April lottery entirely.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Search for Backend Engineer roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history by occupation code. You can filter for companies that have sponsored the exact role you're targeting rather than guessing from job descriptions.
Clarify remote work location in your LCA early
If your backend role allows remote work, your employer's LCA must list every worksite where you'll spend more than 30 days in a year. Switching to an unlisted location after filing can trigger compliance issues, so confirm your work arrangement before the petition is submitted.
Protect your status during a company transition
If you're changing employers, your new sponsor can file an H-1B transfer while you continue working under your current authorization. Don't wait until after your last day at the old job. The 60-day grace period starts the moment your employment ends, not when the transfer petition is filed.

Find Backend Engineer JobsBackend Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Backend Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Backend Engineer positions qualify because they normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the specific job duties and the degree requirement the employer sets. If your role involves architecture, distributed systems, or API design, the specialty occupation standard is straightforward to satisfy.
Which SOC code do most employers use for Backend Engineer H-1B petitions?
Most employers file under SOC code 15-1252, Software Developers. Some use 15-1299 for more specialized roles. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level on the LCA, which affects your minimum guaranteed salary. You can cross-reference your duties against the O*NET occupation profile for 15-1252 to confirm the match before your employer files.
How do I find Backend Engineer jobs where the employer actively sponsors H-1B visas?
Use Migrate Mate to search Backend Engineer roles filtered by verified H-1B LCA filing history. This shows you employers who have already sponsored the specific occupation code, not just companies that claim to be open to sponsorship. Checking actual filing history is more reliable than reading 'visa sponsorship available' in a job posting.
Can a backend engineering contractor or staffing arrangement qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
It can, but USCIS applies stricter scrutiny to third-party placement arrangements. The petitioning employer must demonstrate it controls the day-to-day work and maintains an employer-employee relationship throughout the petition period. Contracts, supervision structures, and end-client agreements all factor into the evaluation. Direct hires face fewer complications during adjudication.
What happens to my H-1B status if my backend engineering role shifts significantly after filing?
If your job duties change materially after your H-1B is approved, your employer may need to file an amended petition with USCIS before the change takes effect. Adding new responsibilities like engineering management or a different product area can qualify as a material change. A new LCA reflecting the updated role and wage level is typically required alongside the amended petition.
