Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Junior Software Developer
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the job duties. A degree in computer science, software engineering, or information systems is the strongest foundation. Unrelated degrees paired with bootcamp certificates often trigger Requests for Evidence.
Search LCA filings to find active sponsors
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filings for software developer roles. This surfaces companies that have already filed for positions matching yours, so you're not guessing about sponsorship willingness.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early
Employers enrolled in E-Verify are already set up for employment eligibility verification, which signals readiness to handle work authorization paperwork. Check E-Verify enrollment status before investing time in a multi-round interview process.
Understand the prevailing wage tier your role falls under
Junior developer roles typically fall at DOL wage Level I or II. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your target SOC code and metro area before negotiating an offer, since your salary must meet or exceed the certified LCA wage.
Time your job search around the H-1B cap cycle
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, target employers at least four to five months before your OPT expires so they can register in time and file a full petition if selected.
Review the O*NET profile for your specific job duties
The O*NET occupation profile for software developers outlines the tasks and knowledge requirements USCIS uses to evaluate specialty occupation status. Align your resume and offer letter language with these descriptions to reduce the risk of an RFE.
H-1B Visa Junior Software Developer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a junior-level title affect H-1B specialty occupation approval?
The job title alone doesn't determine approval. USCIS evaluates whether the actual duties require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Junior roles that involve writing production code, architecting features, or working within an engineering team under defined technical requirements routinely qualify, provided the employer documents the degree requirement in the job description and LCA.
Can I get H-1B sponsorship as a new graduate without prior U.S. work experience?
Yes. H-1B eligibility is based on the job's degree requirement, not years of experience. Many employers sponsor H-1B petitions for new graduates, particularly those already on OPT. The key is landing a role with a company that has an established immigration program and is willing to file before the cap registration deadline in March.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for software developers?
Technology companies, consulting firms, financial services companies, and large enterprises with in-house engineering teams are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for software developer roles. Companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for software developer positions in prior years are the most reliable candidates. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for developer roles, so you can focus your search on confirmed sponsors.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off as a junior developer?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new sponsor, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. During that window, you can't work, but you can interview and negotiate offers. If a new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period ends, you can start working once the petition is received by USCIS.
Does my employer need to pay H-1B filing fees for a junior software developer role?
USCIS requires employers, not employees, to pay the I-129 petition fee, the ACWIA training fee, and the fraud prevention and detection fee. Employers with 25 or fewer full-time equivalent employees pay reduced versions of some fees. An employer asking you to cover these costs is violating DOL rules, and you can report it to the Wage and Hour Division.
