Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Cardiovascular Surgeon
Verify your ECFMG certification before applying
USCIS expects international medical graduates to hold valid ECFMG certification as part of the specialty occupation evidence package. Have your certificate number and status ready before any employer initiates the H-1B petition, not after.
Target academic medical centers with cap-exempt status
Universities and their affiliated teaching hospitals are often cap-exempt H-1B filers, meaning they can sponsor you outside the annual lottery. A cardiovascular surgery position at a university health system can start any time of year.
Use OFLC Wage Search to anchor your salary negotiation
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing wage for your SOC code and geographic area. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your target metro before negotiating your offer so you know the DOL floor your employer is legally bound to meet.
Search Migrate Mate for employers with active H-1B filing history
Not every hospital advertises whether it sponsors H-1B visas, but DOL LCA data doesn't lie. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified cardiovascular surgery filing history so you're applying where sponsorship is already established practice.
Get your foreign medical credentials evaluated early
If you trained outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized service supports the specialty occupation determination in your I-129 petition. Delays in evaluation can push your petition timeline past the October 1 start date.
Confirm the employer files the I-129 before resigning
Don't give notice to your current employer until USCIS receives the I-129 petition and issues a receipt notice. The H-1B portability rule under AC21 requires an approved or pending petition before you can transfer status to a new employer.

Find Cardiovascular Surgeon JobsCardiovascular Surgeon H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a cardiovascular surgeon role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Cardiovascular surgery requires a medical degree, residency, and a subspecialty fellowship, making it one of the most clearly defined specialty occupations under USCIS criteria. Employers rarely face RFEs on specialty occupation grounds for this role. The O*NET classification and standard job requirements support the degree nexus without ambiguity.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for cardiovascular surgeons?
Academic medical centers, large hospital systems, and multispecialty physician groups are the most active sponsors. Teaching hospitals affiliated with universities often hold cap-exempt status, which means they can file H-1B petitions outside the annual April lottery. You can find employers with verified H-1B cardiovascular surgery filing history on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect cardiovascular surgeon candidates?
If your target employer is a private hospital or private practice without cap-exempt status, your petition enters the annual lottery with an 85,000-slot cap. Academic medical centers and nonprofit research institutions are frequently cap-exempt, bypassing the lottery entirely. Prioritizing cap-exempt employers is a practical strategy for surgeons who need placement on a specific timeline.
What happens to my H-1B status if my hospital employer is acquired or merged?
A corporate restructuring, merger, or acquisition can affect your H-1B petition depending on whether the successor entity assumes the original employer's obligations. Under AC21, if the new entity is a successor in interest and the job duties remain materially the same, your status typically continues. USCIS guidance recommends filing an amended I-129 to document the change and protect portability rights.
Can a cardiovascular surgeon on H-1B moonlight or hold privileges at multiple hospitals?
H-1B status is employer-specific, so working at a second facility requires that employer to file a concurrent H-1B petition on your behalf. Call coverage, locum shifts, or privileges at a separate institution without a concurrent petition puts your status at risk. Each sponsoring employer must have a certified LCA covering the relevant work location before you perform any services there.
