H-1B Visa Dermatopathologist Jobs
Dermatopathologist roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines, requiring a medical degree plus fellowship training in dermatopathology. Academic medical centers, large health systems, and independent pathology groups regularly sponsor H-1B visa petitions for this subspecialty, which faces a persistent national shortage of qualified physicians.

Verify your fellowship counts toward H-1B
USCIS treats dermatopathology fellowship training as part of your qualifying specialty occupation credentials. Document your ACGME-accredited fellowship certificate and board eligibility separately from your pathology or dermatology residency when your employer prepares the H-1B petition.
Search LCA filings for dermatopathology roles
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Application filings by SOC code 29-1222 (Physicians, Pathologists). Employers who have filed LCAs for pathology subspecialties have an established H-1B sponsorship infrastructure, which shortens your petition timeline significantly.
Target academic medical centers with cap-exempt status
Universities and affiliated nonprofit research hospitals are cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file your petition at any time without waiting for the annual lottery. Dermatopathology positions at academic centers often come with this filing advantage built in.
Find verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by dermatopathology or pathology subspecialty on Migrate Mate to see employers with confirmed H-1B filing history. This lets you prioritize outreach to health systems that have already navigated subspecialty physician sponsorship rather than educating a new employer from scratch.
Clarify dual-appointment structures before filing
Many dermatopathologists hold joint appointments across a hospital and an affiliated university. Both entities may need to appear as co-petitioners on the H-1B. Confirm the employment structure with your department administrator before the petition is drafted to avoid an RFE.
Request premium processing for contract start dates
USCIS premium processing guarantees a 15-business-day adjudication decision. For subspecialty physician hires tied to a specific contract or academic year start date, ask your employer to include the premium processing fee upfront rather than escalating after a delay.
H-1B Visa Dermatopathologist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does dermatopathology qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Dermatopathology requires a medical degree followed by residency training in pathology or dermatology and an ACGME-accredited fellowship in dermatopathology. USCIS classifies it as a specialty occupation because the role demands a specific, advanced body of theoretical and practical knowledge not attainable without that postgraduate training sequence.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for dermatopathologists?
Academic medical centers, university-affiliated hospitals, independent dermatopathology laboratories, large integrated health systems, and Veterans Affairs facilities are the primary sponsors. Academic and nonprofit hospital employers often hold cap-exempt status, allowing them to file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery window. You can browse employers with confirmed filing history on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect dermatopathologist hiring timelines?
If your employer is cap-subject, registration opens each March and USCIS selects registrations by lottery for the October 1 fiscal year start. Cap-exempt employers, such as universities and nonprofit research hospitals that frequently hire dermatopathologists, can file at any point in the year, giving you a faster and more predictable start date.
Can a dermatopathologist on J-1 status transition to an H-1B without a waiver?
Only if your J-1 visa program does not carry a two-year home-residency requirement. If it does, you must obtain a waiver, typically through a Conrad 30 state waiver program or a federal agency waiver, before USCIS will approve a change of status to H-1B. Confirm your J-1 program's requirements with your exchange sponsor before negotiating an offer.
What prevailing wage level applies to dermatopathologist H-1B petitions?
Your employer must attest to paying at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation, geographic location, and experience level on the Labor Condition Application. Dermatopathologists are typically classified at wage level III or IV given the subspecialty fellowship requirement. You can verify the applicable wage tier for a specific location using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
