Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Career Counselor
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to career counseling work. A psychology or counseling degree strengthens your petition. An unrelated degree paired with extensive counseling experience can trigger an RFE, so gather transcript evaluations before applying.
Target higher education employers specifically
Colleges and universities filing H-1B petitions for Career Counselors are often cap-exempt, meaning your petition skips the lottery entirely. Focus your search on institutions affiliated with higher education or nonprofit research organizations to access this pathway.
Check employer LCA filings on Migrate Mate
Search Career Counselor roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B Labor Condition Application filings for this occupation. This filters out employers who have never sponsored the role, saving you time before outreach.
Confirm prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Run your target job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to find the Level I through Level IV prevailing wage for your role. Your offered salary must meet or exceed the certified wage, and a Level I offer may limit advancement prospects.
Use O*NET to document specialty occupation
Career Counselors fall under O*NET Job Zone 5, which supports the specialty occupation argument. Reference the O*NET occupation profile when preparing supporting documentation for your H-1B petition, especially if your employer has not sponsored this role before.
File before the fiscal year deadline with premium processing
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be submitted during the April registration window for an October 1 start date. If your employer agrees to premium processing, USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days, reducing the uncertainty period before you can start.

Find Career Counselor JobsCareer Counselor H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Career Counselor role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, Career Counselor positions typically qualify because USCIS recognizes them as requiring at least a bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a closely related field. The key is that your employer's job description specifies a degree requirement tied directly to the duties of the role, not just a general preference.
Are Career Counselor jobs at universities exempt from the H-1B cap?
Many are. Career Counselors employed directly by a nonprofit college or university, or by a nonprofit research organization affiliated with one, can file H-1B petitions outside the annual 85,000-cap lottery. This means no registration window and no random selection, though the employer must document the qualifying relationship to USCIS.
How do I find employers who have actually sponsored H-1B visas for Career Counselors?
Search Career Counselor roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filings for this occupation code. This lets you focus outreach on organizations that have already navigated the process for this specific role rather than employers unfamiliar with sponsoring counseling positions.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Career Counselor employer mid-status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for USCIS approval, as long as you've maintained valid status. The new employer files a fresh I-129 covering the Career Counselor role, and your six-year H-1B clock continues uninterrupted.
What happens if my Career Counselor job duties expand into coaching or therapy?
Expanded duties that fall outside the scope of your certified Labor Condition Application can create a compliance problem. If your role shifts materially, your employer may need to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before you take on the new responsibilities. Document any duty changes with HR early to avoid unauthorized scope issues.
