Verify your degree aligns with SOC 11-9111
USCIS evaluates specialty occupation by matching your degree field to the role's SOC code. A degree in health administration, nursing, or life sciences maps cleanly. A general business degree without clinical coursework can trigger an RFE, so document the connection proactively.
Target employers with certified LCA histories
Search Migrate Mate to filter Clinical Operations Manager roles by employers who have certified LCAs under your target SOC code. Employers with repeat filings signal an established H-1B process, reducing the risk of a first-time sponsorship delay during offer negotiations.
Use OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage
Look up the prevailing wage for Clinical Operations Manager in your target metro using the OFLC Wage Search before you receive an offer. Knowing the Level II or Level III benchmark lets you evaluate whether an employer's offer meets DOL requirements without surprises after filing.
Prioritize cap-exempt or cap-exempt-adjacent employers
Hospital systems, academic medical centers, and nonprofit research institutions can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. If you're currently on OPT, targeting these employers eliminates lottery risk entirely and lets the employer file any time of year.
Get your clinical credentials documented before interviews
Many Clinical Operations Manager roles require documentation of GCP training, IRB experience, or protocol management history. Employers starting the LCA process need to confirm specialty occupation in the filing, and gaps in your credential record can slow that assessment significantly.
Confirm the employer's I-129 timeline against your OPT end date
USCIS standard processing for an I-129 petition currently runs three to five months. If your OPT expires within that window, confirm the employer will file with premium processing or has the cap-gap provision covered before you accept an offer.
H-1B Visa Clinical Operations Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Operations Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as health administration, clinical research, life sciences, or nursing. USCIS evaluates the job duties against the stated degree requirement. Roles where a general business degree alone satisfies the requirement may face scrutiny, so the employer's job description should specify the required field of study clearly.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Clinical Operations Manager roles?
Contract research organizations, large pharma and biotech companies, academic medical centers, and integrated hospital systems account for the bulk of LCA filings under this title. Academic medical centers and nonprofit hospital systems are often cap-exempt, meaning they can file year-round without entering the lottery. You can browse employers with active filing histories for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Clinical Operations Manager H-1B filings?
Your employer must certify in the LCA that your offered salary meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for Clinical Operations Manager in the specific work location. The prevailing wage is tiered by experience level, and metro markets with higher clinical research activity typically carry higher wage floors. Confirm the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before finalizing your offer.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I move between clinical organizations?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file before your current authorized stay expires. The role at the new employer must still qualify as a specialty occupation under the same SOC classification, which Clinical Operations Manager consistently meets.
What documentation should I prepare before an employer begins my H-1B filing?
Your employer's immigration counsel will need your degree certificates, official transcripts, a detailed resume showing clinical operations responsibilities, and any professional certifications such as GCP training records or clinical research coordinator credentials. If your degree was issued outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator is typically required. Having these documents organized before the offer stage speeds up the LCA and I-129 filing timeline significantly.
