Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the Contract Specialist duties. A business administration or supply chain degree strengthens the specialty occupation argument; a general studies degree may trigger an RFE.
Target federal contractors with active LCA history
Defense primes and government services firms file H-1B LCAs for Contract Specialists at higher rates than most industries. Search Migrate Mate to filter employers with verified H-1B filing history specifically for this occupation code.
Check prevailing wage before evaluating any offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for SOC code 13-1023 in your work location. Your offered salary must meet at least the Level I threshold for the employer's LCA to be certified.
Confirm the employer is E-Verify enrolled before accepting
Federal contracting firms are legally required to use E-Verify, so most are already enrolled. Confirm enrollment status before your employer files the I-129, since E-Verify participation is required for H-1B cap-exempt filings at qualifying institutions.
Request the LCA be filed for your actual work location
Contract Specialists frequently rotate between client sites or government facilities. If your work location differs from the employer's headquarters, the LCA must list the correct worksite address or you risk a DOL compliance violation.
Use O*NET to document specialty occupation evidence
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for Contract Specialists to document the education and knowledge requirements USCIS evaluates. Including this in your employer's petition package reduces the risk of a specialty occupation RFE.

Find Contract Specialist JobsContract Specialist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Contract Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as business, supply chain management, law, or finance. USCIS looks at whether the degree requirement is standard in the industry for this role. General or undefined degree requirements weaken the specialty occupation argument, so your employer's job description should specify the field explicitly.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Contract Specialists?
Federal contractors, defense primes, healthcare systems, and large government services firms are among the most active sponsors for this role. Because federal contractors are already required to use E-Verify, they tend to be more experienced with employment-based visa filings. You can search employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for Contract Specialist roles on Migrate Mate.
What SOC code is used for Contract Specialist H-1B filings?
DOL classifies Contract Specialists under SOC code 13-1023, which covers Purchasing Agents. Your employer's LCA must use this code to certify the prevailing wage. If the role has procurement and contracting duties that span multiple codes, the employer should select the code that best matches the primary function of the position.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer mid-contract?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, without waiting for approval, provided you've been lawfully employed for at least 180 days after your H-1B was approved. The new employer must file a transfer petition and a new LCA covering your work location and the Contract Specialist role.
How does a government contracting assignment affect my H-1B if I work at a federal facility?
Your H-1B is sponsored by your direct employer, not the federal agency. If you're a contractor working at a government site, your employer's LCA must list that facility as the worksite. If the assignment moves to a new location not covered by the original LCA, your employer must file an amended LCA with DOL before you begin work at the new site.
