H-1B Visa Corporate Counsel Jobs
Corporate Counsel roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a J.D. and bar admission. Large companies, financial institutions, and tech firms sponsor regularly, but the petition must tie your legal credentials directly to the in-house practice area you'll be supporting.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Corporate Counsel
Verify your J.D. meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree to directly relate to the legal work you'll perform. If your J.D. is foreign, get a credential evaluation confirming U.S. equivalency before your employer files the I-129 petition.
Target employers with in-house legal departments
Companies large enough to maintain a legal team are far more likely to sponsor. Use Migrate Mate to filter Corporate Counsel postings by employers with active H-1B LCA filing history in legal occupations.
Confirm bar admission covers your work state
Your H-1B petition ties you to a specific work location. If the role is in a state where you're not barred, clarify whether in-house practice is exempt from that state's admission requirements before your employer submits the LCA.
Check the prevailing wage before offer negotiations
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing rate for your role and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 23-1011 before you negotiate so you know the floor the employer must meet.
Prepare for specialty occupation RFEs proactively
USCIS scrutinizes in-house counsel petitions more than external law firm roles. Gather a letter from your employer detailing why the specific practice area requires a J.D., not just general business judgment.
Understand the 60-day grace period if you're between roles
H-1B holders have a 60-day grace period after employment ends to secure a new sponsor. Your new employer can file an H-1B transfer immediately, and you can start working once USCIS receives the petition, not after approval.

Find Corporate Counsel JobsCorporate Counsel H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Corporate Counsel role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS consistently recognizes in-house Corporate Counsel positions as specialty occupations because the role requires a J.D. and active bar admission as a minimum entry requirement. Your employer's petition should document why the specific legal practice area, such as securities, M&A, or employment law, demands that specialized degree rather than general business knowledge.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new in-house legal employer without losing status?
Yes, through H-1B portability. Your new employer files an I-129 transfer petition while you're still employed, and you can start the new Corporate Counsel role as soon as USCIS receives the petition, not after it's approved. The new LCA must reflect the wage and location for the incoming position before the petition is filed.
How do I find companies that actively sponsor H-1B visas for Corporate Counsel roles?
Migrate Mate lets you search Corporate Counsel openings filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history in legal occupations. This cuts through postings at companies unlikely to sponsor and focuses your search on employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for in-house legal roles specifically.
Does my foreign law degree qualify me for H-1B sponsorship as Corporate Counsel?
It depends on equivalency. USCIS accepts a foreign J.D. or LL.M. equivalent if a credentials evaluation confirms it matches a U.S. law degree. You'll also need to be barred in the relevant U.S. jurisdiction or qualify for an in-house counsel exemption in that state. Your employer should address degree equivalency explicitly in the I-129 support letter.
What happens to my H-1B if my employer is acquired or merges with another company?
If the acquiring entity qualifies as a successor-in-interest and your role and terms don't materially change, your H-1B typically remains valid without a new filing. If the legal entity changes significantly or your job duties shift, your new employer should file an amended I-129 petition promptly. USCIS guidance distinguishes between universal and stock-based acquisitions, so the legal structure of the deal matters.
