Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Cost Accountant
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation requirements
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to be in accounting, finance, or a directly related field. A general business degree without accounting coursework can trigger an RFE, so gather transcripts and a credential evaluation before applying.
Search LCA filings to target active sponsors
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Application filings by the SOC code for cost accountants. This shows which employers have actually sponsored this role, not just which ones claim to be open to it.
Find verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with documented H-1B filing history for accounting roles, so you're not guessing which companies will sponsor. Search by job title and location to see only employers with a track record.
Align your offer letter SOC code before filing
Your employer's LCA must use the correct Standard Occupational Classification code for your role. A mismatch between your job duties and the filed SOC code is a common RFE trigger that delays or jeopardizes approval.
Prioritize cap-exempt employers if lottery risk concerns you
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning your petition can be filed any time without lottery selection. Cost accountant roles exist at these organizations and face no April registration deadline.
Check O*NET before your employer writes your job description
The O*NET profile for cost accountants defines the tasks and knowledge areas USCIS uses to evaluate specialty occupation status. Your job description should reflect those duties, especially the analytical and degree-specific functions, to support a clean petition.

Find Cost Accountant JobsCost Accountant H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cost Accountant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Cost Accountant positions qualify as specialty occupations because USCIS recognizes that the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. Your job offer letter and employer's attestation must confirm the degree requirement is a standard condition of the position, not just a preference.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Cost Accountant positions?
Manufacturing, healthcare systems, defense contractors, and logistics companies are consistent H-1B filers for cost accountant roles because they run complex internal costing operations that require dedicated accounting staff. You can confirm an employer's actual filing history by reviewing DOL LCA disclosure data or searching verified sponsors on Migrate Mate.
Can my employer file my H-1B petition before I finish my current OPT authorization?
Yes, and timing matters. If you're on F-1 OPT, your employer should file your H-1B petition during the April cap-subject registration window so that an approved petition takes effect October 1. If your OPT expires before October 1 and you have a timely-filed petition, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically.
What happens to my H-1B status if I move from one Cost Accountant role to another employer?
You can transfer your H-1B to a new employer through portability under AC21, provided your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition while your current status is valid. You can begin working for the new employer once the transfer petition is filed and shows as received by USCIS, without waiting for final approval.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Cost Accountant H-1B applications?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for the cost accountant occupation in the specific metro area where you'll work. The wage level depends on your experience and job duties, ranging from Level I through Level IV as defined by the OFLC Wage Search. Offers below the certified prevailing wage will cause the LCA to be rejected before the petition is even filed.
