Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to cost accounting functions. A general business degree can trigger an RFE. A CPA credential or a master's in accounting strengthens the specialty occupation argument significantly.
Target industries with consistent LCA filings
Manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and healthcare companies file LCAs for Cost Accounting Manager roles far more regularly than retail or hospitality. Filter your search by industry to find employers with active H-1B filing history for finance and accounting titles.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find employers whose DOL Labor Condition Application history confirms they've filed for Cost Accounting Manager or related accounting roles, so you're not applying blind to companies with no H-1B track record.
Confirm prevailing wage level before negotiating
Look up the wage level for your target metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before you enter salary discussions. Your offer must meet the Level I through Level IV threshold for your SOC code, and a Level I offer for a manager-title role often draws scrutiny.
Ask HR whether cost accounting roles are cap-exempt
If a prospective employer is a university, nonprofit research organization, or government entity, their H-1B filings bypass the annual cap entirely. Cost accounting functions exist at many cap-exempt institutions, and those roles can start any time of year.
Understand the LCA's public access file requirement
Your employer must post the LCA notice at your primary worksite before USCIS adjudicates the petition. If your role involves client sites or hybrid arrangements, clarify with the employer how they'll document your work location to avoid an RFE on worksite compliance.
H-1B Visa Cost Accounting Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cost Accounting Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies Cost Accounting Manager positions as specialty occupations because the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a directly related field. Employers document this in the I-129 petition by showing the job description's duties require theoretical and practical application of accounting knowledge at a professional level.
Which employers regularly sponsor H-1B visas for Cost Accounting Manager positions?
Manufacturing companies, pharmaceutical firms, healthcare systems, and large professional services organizations are among the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this title. You can identify employers with verified filing history for accounting manager roles by searching Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL LCA data by job title and employer.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer for a Cost Accounting Manager role?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition, without waiting for USCIS approval, provided your current status is valid and there's no gap in authorized employment. The new employer must file a new I-129 and obtain a certified LCA for the Cost Accounting Manager role before you start.
How does a hybrid or remote work arrangement affect the H-1B filing for this role?
Each location where you perform work must be covered by a certified LCA. If your Cost Accounting Manager role involves working from home, your home address becomes a worksite and the employer may need to file an amended I-129 or a new LCA if the work location is in a different metropolitan statistical area than the original petition's covered area.
Does holding a CPA license strengthen my H-1B petition for a Cost Accounting Manager role?
A CPA credential substantially supports the specialty occupation argument by demonstrating licensure that requires a degree and professional examination in accounting. USCIS can scrutinize petitions where the degree field is broad, such as general business, so a CPA license provides independent evidence that your qualifications are directly tied to the cost accounting functions of the role.
