DEFINITION
Under the general direction of the Parks Operations Manager, this position helps lead and coordinate daily operations across the Dane County Park system. The Parks Crew Leader plans, assigns, and monitors the work of park staff and provides field leadership for maintenance, repair, construction, facilities, grounds, and related operational projects. This position helps ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards, supports work planning and operational coordination, and assists with snow removal, emergency response, and other park operations as needed. Specific duties and responsibilities vary between Park Crew Leaders, each Park Crew Leader should be able to support and back up other Parks Crew Leader operational areas as needed.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Plan, prioritize, assign, and lead the work of full-time staff, LTE seasonal employees, and occasionally contractors engaged in park operations, maintenance, repair, construction, and special projects.
- Work closely with the Parks Operations Manager, Park Planning Manager, and other division staff to identify priorities; develop work plans, schedules, cost estimates, specifications, and material lists; maintain work orders and repair requests; and coordinate project logistics.
- Procure or coordinate the procurement of materials, supplies, tools, equipment, and rental resources needed to complete assigned work.
- Monitor work to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, and applicable codes.
- Maintain project and maintenance documentation, including labor, equipment usage, materials, costs, photos, inspections, and status records.
- Provide field leadership and directly perform skilled and semi-skilled work across a wide range of park system functions, including building and facility maintenance, park infrastructure repair, utilities, wells, septic systems, HVAC systems, fabrication, concrete work, excavation, grading, site preparation, landscaping, erosion control, property stabilization, turf maintenance, and related operational duties.
- Operate and oversee the use of vehicles, trailers, heavy equipment, mowers, tools, and small engines, and perform routine inspection, preventive maintenance, and minor repair of equipment and facilities.
- Respond to park visitors in a courteous manner and provide general park information when approached in the field.
- Assist with emergency preparedness and response, snow and ice control, special event support, and other park operations as assigned.
- Provide backup support across crew leader operational areas as needed.

Education, Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience equivalent to High School/GED graduation and four (4) years of experience in maintenance and/or construction which includes substantial experience performing varied and responsible mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, heating, electrical repair and equipment operation work and one (1) year of experience interacting with the public.
Certifications/Licenses
- Applicants must possess a valid class “A” commercial driver's license (CDL) with an air brake endorsement at the time of application.
