H-1B Visa Engineering Manager Jobs
Engineering Manager roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Many large tech and manufacturing employers sponsor H-1B transfers and new petitions year-round, outside the annual lottery cap, if you're moving from another H-1B employer.

About the role
Rippling’s Talent Engineering organization powers the systems behind how companies plan, hire, and manage their workforce. Within this, our Workforce Planning product sits at the center of some of the most critical and complex decisions businesses make—spanning headcount planning, compensation, and equity management.
We’re hiring an Engineering Manager, Workforce Planning (M7) to lead a high-impact team building this rapidly growing product. This is one of the fastest-growing areas within Talent, with strong demand from enterprise customers navigating increasingly complex planning cycles.
The product itself is inherently challenging—modeling real-world workflows like performance review cycles, compensation planning, and organizational changes that are difficult to reason about and even harder to systematize. We’re now layering AI and natural language capabilities on top of these workflows, unlocking powerful new ways for customers to interact with and automate workforce decisions.
In this role, you’ll lead a team of engineers, driving both product innovation and technical execution in a fast-moving, high-growth environment.
What you will do
- Lead and develop a team of engineers building Rippling’s Workforce Planning product
- Own the technical direction across compensation, equity, and headcount planning systems
- Drive architecture and system design for complex, stateful workflows that power enterprise planning use cases
- Partner closely with Product to define and execute on a roadmap serving HR leaders, finance teams, and executives
- Build and scale AI-native experiences, leveraging LLMs to simplify complex planning and decision-making workflows
- Establish strong engineering execution—balancing speed, quality, and reliability
- Navigate ambiguity and break down complex business problems into scalable technical solutions
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and high engineering standards
What you will need
- 8+ years of software engineering experience
- 2+ years of engineering management experience, with a track record of leading small, high-performing teams
- Strong technical foundation in building complex SaaS systems or distributed systems
- Experience working on products with high business complexity (e.g., finance, HR, planning systems)
- Ability to reason through and simplify ambiguous, hard-to-model workflows
- Experience or strong interest in building AI/LLM-powered product experiences, particularly in enterprise contexts
- Strong product sense and ability to partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills and ability to drive alignment across teams

Verify your role meets specialty occupation
Engineering Manager must require a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Review the O*NET occupation profile for this title and confirm your job description references technical engineering knowledge, not general business management, before your employer files.
Target cap-exempt employers strategically
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the lottery entirely. If you're open to higher-ed or research-sector roles, these employers can file any time of year.
Request an employer's LCA history before accepting
Before signing an offer, ask whether the employer has filed Labor Condition Applications for Engineering Manager roles previously. Use Migrate Mate to search verified LCA filing history by employer and occupation, so you're not the first sponsored hire in a role category.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier matches your level
DOL assigns four wage levels to each LCA. Engineering Manager at Level I is routinely flagged for misclassification by USCIS. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to verify your offer lands at Level II or III before your employer certifies the LCA.
Negotiate H-1B transfer timing around your I-94
When switching employers on H-1B portability, you can start work as soon as your new employer files the transfer petition, not after approval. Time your last day carefully: you have a 60-day grace period after your current role ends if the new petition isn't filed yet.
Prepare a technical scope document for RFE defense
USCIS frequently issues Requests for Evidence on Engineering Manager petitions, questioning whether the role requires a specific degree. Draft a detailed job duties breakdown that connects each responsibility to a specific engineering discipline before your employer submits Form I-129.

Find Engineering Manager JobsEngineering Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Engineering Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering or technical field. USCIS scrutinizes Engineering Manager petitions closely because the title can imply general management duties. Your employer's job description needs to tie each responsibility to a specific engineering discipline, not just team oversight or budget management, to withstand adjudication.
Which employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Engineering Manager positions?
Large technology companies, aerospace and defense contractors, semiconductor manufacturers, and industrial engineering firms file the most LCAs for Engineering Manager roles. These employers have established immigration programs and dedicated HR processes for H-1B sponsorship. You can search employers with verified LCA filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate, filtered by location and industry.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Engineering Manager role without waiting for a new cap slot?
Yes. H-1B portability lets you start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition with USCIS, as long as your current H-1B is valid and you've maintained lawful status. You don't re-enter the lottery. USCIS will adjudicate the transfer petition, and your new employer must certify a fresh LCA for the specific Engineering Manager role and location.
What documentation should I prepare to support an H-1B petition for an Engineering Manager role?
You'll need academic transcripts confirming a degree in a relevant engineering field, a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., and a detailed employment verification letter from previous employers listing your engineering responsibilities. Your current employer provides the certified LCA, Form I-129, and a support letter connecting the Engineering Manager duties specifically to your degree field.
How does a promotion to Engineering Manager affect my existing H-1B status?
A material change in job duties, such as moving from individual contributor to Engineering Manager, typically requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the promotion takes effect. The amended petition needs a new certified LCA reflecting the updated title, prevailing wage level, and job description. Filing after the promotion has already occurred can create compliance exposure for both you and your employer.
