Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct link between your degree field and the role. A degree in mechanical engineering or facilities management supports the case far better than a general business degree, so gather transcripts and credential evaluations before applying.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated facilities departments are cap-exempt, meaning you can file any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery window. Prioritize these employers in your search on Migrate Mate.
Pull OFLC prevailing wage data for your metro
Before negotiating an offer, look up the Level II or III prevailing wage for your SOC code and city using the OFLC Wage Search. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above this figure, so knowing it upfront prevents offer-stage surprises.
Ask about E-Verify enrollment during screening
STEM OPT and certain work authorization bridges require the employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. If you're transitioning from OPT, confirm E-Verify status before investing time in the interview process for any facilities role.
Document hands-on certifications alongside your degree
Facilities roles often involve licensed trades work. While HVAC, electrical, or boiler certifications don't substitute for a degree, they strengthen the specialty occupation argument in the I-129 petition by showing the role requires specialized theoretical and applied knowledge.
File early to capture the full 60-day grace period
If your current employer's H-1B ends before a new job starts, you have a 60-day grace period. USCIS must receive the new I-129 while your status is still valid, so work with your new employer to start the filing process immediately after accepting an offer.

Find Facilities Maintenance Technician JobsFacilities Maintenance Technician H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Facilities Maintenance Technician role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires the role to normally require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific specialty. A facilities technician job that demands an engineering or facilities management degree to perform building systems analysis, energy modeling, or complex HVAC troubleshooting can qualify. A general maintenance role with no degree requirement typically does not.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for facilities roles?
Hospitals, university facilities departments, large hotel chains, and corporate real estate companies with in-house engineering teams are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for facilities positions. These employers maintain complex building systems that require degreed technical staff. You can browse companies with verified H-1B LCA filing history for facilities roles on Migrate Mate.
What SOC code applies to Facilities Maintenance Technician for the LCA?
The most commonly used SOC codes are 49-9071 (Maintenance and Repair Workers, General) and 17-2112 (Industrial Engineers) for more engineering-focused facilities roles. The employer selects the code that best matches the actual duties. The SOC code determines the prevailing wage level your employer must certify on the LCA through the OFLC Wage Search.
Can O*NET job zone data help my employer build the specialty occupation argument?
Yes. O*NET classifies Facilities Maintenance roles and lists the typical education, knowledge domains, and technical skills required. If your employer's job description maps closely to the O*NET profile for a Job Zone 3 or higher occupation, that data can support the specialty occupation determination in the I-129 petition and any RFE response.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take for a facilities technician position?
Standard USCIS processing currently runs three to six months after filing. If your employer opts for premium processing, USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days for an additional fee. Cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per fiscal year after lottery selection in April, so your start date is tied to the October 1 cap-year start unless you're filing with a cap-exempt employer.
