H-1B Visa Family Medicine Physician Jobs
Family Medicine Physician roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require at least a U.S. medical degree or foreign equivalent. Many hospital systems, FQHCs, and multispecialty groups file H-1B petitions for primary care physicians, making this one of the more accessible physician pathways to U.S. work authorization.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Family Medicine Physician
Target FQHCs and underserved area employers
Federally Qualified Health Centers and hospitals in Health Professional Shortage Areas sponsor H-1B physicians at high rates because hiring demand exceeds the domestic supply. These employers are also more practiced at navigating the filing process.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Family Medicine Physician roles by employers with active H-1B LCA filing history on Migrate Mate. This cuts out positions where sponsorship is uncertain and focuses your applications on practices that have actually filed before.
Confirm the employer covers your H-1B filing fees
DOL regulations require employers, not physicians, to pay H-1B filing fees. Clarify this before signing an offer. Some smaller private practices mistakenly try to pass fees to the candidate, which violates federal rules.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's Labor Condition Application must certify wages at or above the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage ranges for Family Medicine in your target metro before any salary discussion.
Request premium processing if your start date is firm
If a hospital or clinic needs you credentialed and practicing by a specific date, ask your employer to file with USCIS premium processing. Standard H-1B adjudication timelines can run several months, which creates gaps in clinical staffing.

Find Family Medicine Physician JobsFamily Medicine Physician H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Family Medicine Physician role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Family Medicine Physicians hold a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree as a minimum requirement for licensure, which satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation standard. The role requires theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, and USCIS consistently adjudicates physician petitions as qualifying. Your employer documents the requirement in the H-1B petition using your medical degree and residency credentials.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Family Medicine Physicians?
Hospital systems, Federally Qualified Health Centers, multispecialty medical groups, urgent care networks, and academic medical centers all file H-1B petitions for primary care physicians. Rural health clinics and employers in Health Professional Shortage Areas tend to sponsor at higher rates because they face greater difficulty filling positions with U.S.-trained physicians. You can browse employers with verified LCA filing history on Migrate Mate.
Can I work at multiple clinic locations on one H-1B petition?
Only if your employer files a Labor Condition Application that covers each worksite location. If you rotate between clinics in different metropolitan areas, each location with a distinct prevailing wage must be covered by a separate LCA or an amended petition. Failure to do this is one of the most common H-1B compliance issues in multi-site medical group employment.
How does state medical licensure interact with H-1B approval for physicians?
USCIS doesn't require full licensure at the time of petition filing, but it does require that you hold or be eligible for a license in the state where you'll practice. Many states issue a temporary or provisional license to physicians awaiting H-1B approval. Your employer typically coordinates this with the state medical board, and the petition should document your licensure status or pending application clearly.
What happens to my H-1B status if I want to change employers or join a different practice?
You can change employers under H-1B portability rules once USCIS has received a new petition from your prospective employer, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. You don't need to wait for the new petition to be approved before starting work. Your new employer must file the H-1B transfer petition and a new LCA covering your new worksite before you begin practicing there.
