Match your degree to the role
H-1B approval for Food Service Directors hinges on proving specialty occupation status. A degree in food service management, hospitality management, or dietetics directly tied to your job duties strengthens the petition and reduces RFE risk.
Target institutional food service employers
Hospital systems, university dining programs, and large contract food service operators file H-1B petitions far more consistently than independent restaurants. Filter your search to these employer categories, where HR teams already understand sponsorship workflows.
Search verified H-1B filers on Migrate Mate
Pull up Food Service Director roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B LCA filing history. That filing history confirms the employer has sponsored this exact job category before, not just adjacent roles.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage meeting DOL prevailing wage levels for your location and job title. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage bands before your offer conversation so you negotiate inside compliant ranges.
Clarify whether your employer is H-1B cap-exempt
Hospitals affiliated with universities and nonprofit research institutions may qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, letting you start without waiting for the annual lottery. Confirm your prospective employer's cap-exempt status directly with their HR or legal team before accepting an offer.

Find Food Service Director JobsFood Service Director H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Food Service Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It qualifies when the position requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as food service management, hospitality management, dietetics, or nutrition as a standard entry requirement. Generic management experience without that degree requirement won't support the specialty occupation finding, so the job description language matters significantly when the employer prepares the petition.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Food Service Directors most consistently?
Hospital systems, university and college dining operations, and national contract food service companies represent the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this title because they have dedicated HR and legal infrastructure for immigration filings. Independent restaurants and small catering companies rarely sponsor because they lack that infrastructure. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history in this job category.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect Food Service Director H-1B petitions?
Before filing an H-1B petition, your employer must obtain a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL confirming the offered wage meets the prevailing wage for your job title and work location. The wage level, from Level I through Level IV, depends on your experience and supervisory responsibilities. You can look up applicable wage rates using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage.
Can a Food Service Director on OPT use cap-gap protection while waiting for H-1B approval?
Yes, if your employer submits a timely H-1B petition before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. If premium processing is used and the petition is approved earlier, your H-1B status begins October 1. USCIS provides specific cap-gap guidance covering F-1 students transitioning through this period.
What happens to my H-1B status if I change food service employers after approval?
H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer once they file a non-frivolous H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, as long as your current H-1B has been approved for at least 180 days. The new employer must file a fresh LCA and I-129 covering your new role, wages, and worksite.
