Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your bachelor's degree to be in accounting, finance, or a closely related field. A general business degree without substantial accounting coursework can trigger an RFE, so document your relevant coursework before your employer files the I-129.
Check prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Run your job title, SOC code, and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before signing an offer. Your offered salary must meet at least the Level I prevailing wage for GL Accountant roles, or your employer's LCA will be rejected by DOL.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter General Ledger Accountant roles by employers who have filed LCAs for this specific occupation code. Employers with recent filings have an active sponsorship process, cutting weeks off the timeline compared to approaching first-time sponsors.
Prioritize cap-exempt or large-quota employers
Hospitals, universities, and nonprofit research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning your I-129 can be filed any time of year without lottery risk. If you're targeting for-profit employers, confirm they'll file for the October 1 start date and register you in the USCIS H-1B lottery in March.
Get your CPA credentials documented early
Employers sponsoring GL Accountants often list CPA licensure or active candidacy as a job requirement. USCIS also views CPA credentials as strong evidence of specialty occupation, so gather your state board scores, transcripts, and license status before the petition stage.
Understand the LCA posting requirement at your worksite
Your employer must post the certified LCA at the physical location where you'll work for at least ten consecutive business days before filing the I-129. Remote or hybrid GL roles complicate this, so clarify your primary worksite address with HR before the DOL certification step.
H-1B Visa General Ledger Accountant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a General Ledger Accountant role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies General Ledger Accountant roles as specialty occupations because the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance, or a directly related field. The O*NET profile for accountants and auditors supports this classification. Employers occasionally receive RFEs if the job description is too broad or lists degree requirements as preferred rather than required, so a precise job description matters.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for GL Accountant roles?
Public companies with large finance teams, regional and national banks, hospital systems, and mid-to-large manufacturing firms file LCAs for General Ledger Accountant roles most frequently. Accounting and advisory firms also sponsor, particularly for roles supporting multi-entity clients. You can filter for employers with active LCA filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate before applying.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect GL Accountant H-1B sponsorship?
Your employer must pay you at least the DOL prevailing wage for a General Ledger Accountant at your specific work location and experience level. The wage is tied to your SOC code and the county or metro area where you work. Before your employer files the LCA, you can verify the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the offer will be approved.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new GL Accountant role at a different company?
Yes. Under AC21 portability rules, you can transfer your H-1B to a new employer in the same or a similar occupational category once your I-129 has been pending for 180 days or more. The new employer files an H-1B transfer petition, and you can begin working for them as soon as USCIS receives it, without waiting for approval.
Does having CPA licensure improve H-1B approval odds for an accounting role?
CPA licensure strengthens an H-1B petition for a General Ledger Accountant position because it demonstrates the role meets the standard that normally requires a bachelor's degree in accounting and ongoing professional credentialing. USCIS adjudicators look for evidence that the position is genuinely professional in nature. Documenting your CPA exam scores, state board registration, or active candidacy in the petition packet reduces RFE risk.
