Match your credentials to LCA job requirements
VP Finance petitions require a degree directly related to the role. A finance, accounting, or economics degree maps cleanly. An unrelated degree needs a credential evaluation showing equivalency before your employer files the LCA with DOL.
Target companies with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter VP Finance roles by employers who have filed LCAs for this title. Companies with recent filings already understand the specialty occupation standard and prevailing wage obligations for senior finance positions.
Verify prevailing wage tier before negotiating compensation
Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the prevailing wage for your metro area at Level III or Level IV, which typically apply to VP-level roles. Your offer must meet or exceed that threshold or USCIS will scrutinize the petition.
Confirm the specialty occupation classification holds
USCIS sometimes issues RFEs for senior finance titles arguing the role is managerial rather than a specialty occupation. Review the O*NET profile for this occupation code with your employer's attorney to document the degree-specific duties before filing.
Ask whether the employer qualifies for cap exemption
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research entities are cap-exempt. If you're considering a CFO-adjacent role at a university endowment or nonprofit, your employer can file outside the annual 85,000-slot cap and lottery cycle entirely.
Account for the H-1B filing timeline in your start date
Cap-subject petitions filed in April have an October 1 start date at the earliest. Build that gap into offer negotiations. If your OPT or prior status expires before October 1, discuss cap-gap coverage or premium processing with your employer upfront.
H-1B Visa VP Finance: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a VP Finance role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, VP Finance qualifies when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a directly related field. USCIS looks at whether a specific degree is a normal requirement for the position. Roles where any business degree suffices face higher RFE risk, so the job description should document degree-specific duties like financial modeling, regulatory reporting, or capital structure analysis.
Which employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for VP Finance roles?
Publicly traded corporations, private equity-backed companies, global banks, and technology firms with large finance functions file the most LCAs for VP Finance and equivalent titles. These employers have established immigration programs and understand prevailing wage obligations at the senior level. You can browse verified H-1B sponsoring employers for this role on Migrate Mate, filtered by industry and location.
What prevailing wage level applies to a VP Finance position?
VP Finance roles typically fall at DOL wage Level III or Level IV, which correspond to experienced and fully competent workers or those in positions requiring a high degree of responsibility. Your employer must certify the offered wage meets or exceeds the applicable level for your metropolitan statistical area when filing the LCA. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the threshold before you finalize your offer.
Can my employer file an H-1B petition for a VP Finance role outside the lottery?
Only if the employer qualifies as cap-exempt, meaning it's an institution of higher education, a nonprofit affiliated with one, or a government research organization. Most corporate VP Finance roles are cap-subject and require lottery selection. If selected, the earliest a cap-subject petition can start is October 1 of that fiscal year, so plan your transition timeline accordingly.
What documents should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
You'll need official transcripts, degree certificates, and a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. For a VP Finance role, USCIS may also request evidence that your degree field directly relates to the job duties, so gather any professional certifications such as CPA or CFA, prior performance reviews, and employment verification letters showing progressive finance responsibility.
