H-1B Visa IT Engineer Jobs
IT Engineer roles sit squarely within H-1B visa specialty occupation criteria, requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field. Employers file the LCA with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and the 85,000-slot annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Salary: $140,000 - $170,000 per year
A bit about us:
We're a global real estate investment and management firm with a sizable, diverse portfolio spanning office, retail, industrial, and mixed-use properties across multiple markets and ownership structures. As "smart building" expectations rise, we're investing heavily in the technology backbone behind our properties, from amenity centers to core building systems, and building the team to own that strategy.
Why join us?
- High-visibility individual contributor role — your impact comes from setting strategy and standards, not headcount
- Rare seat at the intersection of physical real estate and digital infrastructure
- The portfolio-wide playbook doesn't exist yet, so you're writing it, not inheriting someone else's
- Real, hands-on use of AI tools to drive efficiency, not just lip service
- Base up to $170K + 20% target bonus
- 3 weeks PTO plus strong benefits
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to a senior infrastructure leader, you'll own the design, standards, and governance for building networking, cybersecurity, and connected systems across a portfolio where no two properties (or owners) look alike.
Three core areas of focus:
- Property-side cybersecurity — protecting connected building systems (HVAC, elevators, access control, cameras) from real-world threats
- Property-side networking — setting the standard for how connectivity reaches each building (fiber, Wi-Fi, segmentation)
- Real estate operations — translating standards into requirements that construction teams, GCs, and vendors actually follow
This is a strategy and standards role, not hands-on configuration. You won't be programming switches, but you need to be fluent at the architecture level (edge switches, distribution switches, firewalls) to direct the network engineers who do.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What you bring:
- 10-12+ years in OT/IT infrastructure (real estate, construction, or multi-site environments preferred)
- 5+ years converging disparate networks across vendors and owners
- Demonstrable hands-on AI use
- Strong cross-functional communication
- Relevant certifications (CCNP, CCIE, CWNA) a plus
SCHEDULE
3 days/week required on-site in Houston.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as an IT Engineer
Verify your degree maps to the role
USCIS scrutinizes whether your specific degree field supports the IT Engineer duties listed in the petition. A general business degree won't hold up if the role requires network architecture or systems engineering. Check the O*NET profile for your SOC code before applying.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, affiliated nonprofits, and qualifying research institutions are exempt from the 85,000-slot cap. IT Engineers at these organizations can start any time of year, skipping the lottery entirely. Filter for these employer types early in your search.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to identify IT Engineer employers with verified DOL LCA filing history. Seeing which companies have filed for your specific occupation code tells you who has sponsored before, so you're not guessing at sponsorship willingness during outreach.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find your Level I through IV range before salary discussions, so you know the floor your offer must clear.
Request premium processing if your start date is firm
USCIS offers premium processing on I-129 petitions for an additional fee, reducing adjudication to 15 business days. If you're transitioning from OPT with a hard CPT or OPT end date, ask your employer's counsel whether premium processing is included in their standard filing.
Document your specialized technical skills precisely
RFEs on IT Engineer petitions often challenge whether the role truly requires a specialty degree. Build a credentials file that maps your specific technical competencies to the job duties, using language consistent with USCIS policy manual specialty occupation standards.
H-1B Visa IT Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Most IT Engineer positions qualify, but USCIS evaluates each petition individually. The role must require a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical field like computer science, electrical engineering, or information systems. Generic IT support roles that accept any degree field are more likely to face an RFE challenging specialty occupation status. Roles involving systems architecture, network engineering, or infrastructure design have a stronger record of approval.
How do I find IT Engineer employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate shows verified LCA filing history by employer and occupation code, so you can see which companies have actually filed H-1B petitions for IT Engineer roles rather than relying on self-reported sponsorship policies. This filters out employers who say they sponsor in theory but have no filing track record for your specific occupation.
Can I switch to a different IT Engineer role mid-H-1B without restarting the lottery?
Yes, changing employers while on H-1B doesn't require re-entering the lottery. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition, and you can start work as soon as USCIS receives it, not after approval, if you're maintaining valid H-1B status. The role must still qualify as a specialty occupation and the new employer must file a certified LCA matching the new position's duties and location.
What happens to my H-1B status if my IT Engineer employer does a layoff?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsor, file for a change of status, or depart the U.S. During those 60 days you aren't authorized to work, but you remain in valid nonimmigrant status. If a new employer files an H-1B transfer before the grace period ends, you can begin work upon USCIS receipt of the petition.
Does the location of my IT Engineer role affect H-1B compliance requirements?
Yes. If you work at a client site or a different location than your employer's primary address, your employer may need to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS and a new LCA for that worksite. This applies to remote work arrangements as well. The LCA must reflect the actual work location, and the prevailing wage must match that specific geographic area per DOL rules.
