Verify your degree maps to SOC 15-1244
Check the O*NET profile for Systems Administrators to confirm your degree field aligns with the specialty occupation definition. Mismatches between your credential and the SOC code are a leading cause of H-1B RFEs for this role.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing history
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt H-1B filers. Senior Systems Administrator roles at these organizations can be filed any time of year, bypassing the annual lottery entirely.
Search LCA filings by occupation code on Migrate Mate
Filter by SOC code 15-1244 on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B filings for Systems Administrator roles. This surfaces sponsors with recent DOL Labor Condition Application history, not just companies that list "visa sponsorship available."
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your actual duties
DOL assigns wage levels I through IV based on complexity and supervision. Senior-level sysadmin work typically warrants Level III or IV. A Level I wage on a senior role signals a mismatch that can trigger a USCIS specialty occupation challenge.
Document infrastructure ownership, not just task execution
H-1B petitions for Systems Administrators face higher scrutiny than software engineering roles. Your offer letter and employer support letter should describe architectural decision-making and system ownership, not routine maintenance, to satisfy the specialty occupation standard.
H-1B Visa Senior Systems Administrator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Systems Administrator role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but the petition needs to show the role requires a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field, not just any degree. USCIS evaluates the actual duties, not the job title. Roles involving network architecture, enterprise infrastructure design, or security engineering generally qualify more cleanly than generalist support positions.
How do I find employers who have sponsored H-1B visas for Systems Administrator roles before?
Use Migrate Mate to search by SOC code 15-1244 and filter for employers with verified LCA filing history. DOL LCA disclosure data shows which companies have filed for this specific occupation code, giving you a more reliable signal of sponsorship intent than job postings alone.
Will my employer's H-1B petition be denied if my degree is in a different field?
It depends on how far the field is from information technology. Computer science, information systems, electrical engineering, and related technical degrees typically support a Systems Administrator petition. A degree in business or a non-technical field will likely trigger an RFE unless the employer can demonstrate the role's theoretical and practical requirements align with that credential.
Can I switch employers after my H-1B is approved as a Senior Systems Administrator?
Yes. Under AC21 portability, you can move to a new employer once your H-1B has been approved and you've been in valid H-1B status. The new employer files an H-1B transfer petition, and you can start working as soon as USCIS receives it, without waiting for approval. The new role must be in the same or a substantially similar occupational classification.
What wage level should my H-1B LCA reflect for a Senior Systems Administrator position?
The DOL uses four prevailing wage levels based on job complexity, autonomy, and supervisory responsibility. A senior-level role with independent system ownership and infrastructure decision-making typically falls at Level III or IV. You can verify the applicable prevailing wage for your location and occupation using the OFLC Wage Search tool before negotiating your offer.
