Verify your MSW meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your role to demand at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. For LCSWs, a master's in social work is the standard, but confirm your employer's job description explicitly requires an MSW, not just any related degree.
Check state licensure before accepting offers
H-1B approval doesn't transfer your LCSW license across state lines. Verify the new state's licensing board accepts your credentials and supervised hours before your employer files the LCA, since licensure gaps can delay your start date.
Target employers with LCA filing history
Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify hospitals, VA medical centers, and community mental health organizations that have filed LCAs for social worker roles. Past filings signal an established HR process and legal team familiar with H-1B paperwork.
Search H-1B social work roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by SOC code 21-1023 on Migrate Mate to find LCSW positions at employers with verified H-1B filing history. This cuts out organizations that list the role but have never sponsored a visa.
Request premium processing before your start date
Standard H-1B processing can run three to five months. If your employer is willing to pay for USCIS premium processing, you'll get a decision within 15 business days, reducing the risk of a gap between your OPT or prior status expiring and your H-1B approval.
Confirm your supervised hours documentation is ready
Many LCSW roles require post-MSW supervised clinical hours for licensure. Gather signed verification letters from supervisors before your employer files the I-129, since USCIS may request evidence of your clinical qualifications during adjudication.

Find Licensed Clinical Social Worker JobsLicensed Clinical Social Worker H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Licensed Clinical Social Worker role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies LCSW positions as specialty occupations because the role normally requires at least a master's degree in social work. The O*NET profile for social workers confirms the typical education requirement. Your employer's job description must reflect that an MSW or higher is a minimum requirement, not merely preferred.
Do I need a state LCSW license before my employer can file the H-1B petition?
You don't need licensure before the I-129 is filed, but USCIS expects you to hold the required license by your intended start date. If your license is pending, your employer should document the application status. Some states allow supervised practice under a provisional license while your full LCSW application is processed, which can bridge the gap.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Licensed Clinical Social Workers?
Hospital systems, VA medical centers, federally qualified health centers, and large nonprofit behavioral health organizations are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for LCSWs. These employers have existing legal infrastructure for immigration filings. Use Migrate Mate to browse LCSW roles filtered by employers with verified LCA filing history, so you're only applying to organizations that have sponsored before.
Can I switch LCSW employers while on H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before your current status expires, you can begin working for them once the petition is received by USCIS, without waiting for approval. Your new role must still qualify as a specialty occupation and must be in the same or a closely related occupational classification.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect LCSW H-1B sponsorship?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer must submit a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your role, SOC code, and work location. You can look up the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search. Employers who offer below the prevailing wage cannot legally file your petition, so confirming this early avoids wasted time in the application process.
