Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
H-1B approval hinges on your role meeting the specialty occupation standard. Pull the O*NET profile for Maintenance Technicians and confirm your employer's job description requires a specific bachelor's degree field, not just any degree or equivalent experience.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your location and job level. Run the OFLC Wage Search using the correct SOC code before you negotiate, so your offered salary clears the LCA threshold from day one.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early in your search
Employers sponsoring H-1B workers must be enrolled in E-Verify. Filter your job search to companies already using E-Verify, they've cleared a key compliance step and are more likely to have an established H-1B filing process. Use Migrate Mate to surface these employers by role and location.
Distinguish field service from facilities maintenance roles
Some Maintenance Technician postings involve primarily manual trade skills that USCIS may not classify as specialty occupation. Target roles in automated manufacturing, HVAC controls, or industrial systems where engineering-level qualifications are explicitly required in the job description.
Secure your LCA before your start date is set
The LCA must be certified by DOL before USCIS can adjudicate the I-129 petition. Ask your employer to begin LCA filing as soon as you receive a verbal offer so certification delays don't push your start date past the H-1B cap-subject filing window.
Document foreign credentials with a credential evaluation
If your engineering or technical degree is from outside the U.S., get a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES-member evaluator before your employer files the I-129. USCIS frequently issues RFEs when foreign degree equivalency isn't established upfront in the petition package.
H-1B Visa Maintenance Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Maintenance Technician jobs qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
They can, but not automatically. USCIS requires the role to meet the specialty occupation standard, meaning the position must normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or industrial technology. Roles that accept any degree or substitute trade experience without a degree requirement often face RFEs or denials. The job description and employer's internal requirements are critical.
How do I find Maintenance Technician employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate shows verified H-1B filing history by employer and job title, so you can identify which companies have sponsored Maintenance Technician roles before. This is more reliable than assuming any employer will sponsor, since many manufacturers and facilities operators have never filed an H-1B petition and won't start for a single hire.
What SOC code applies to Maintenance Technicians for the LCA prevailing wage?
Most Maintenance Technician roles fall under SOC 49-9071 (Maintenance and Repair Workers, General) or 49-9041 (Industrial Machinery Mechanics), depending on the scope of work. Your employer's HR team or immigration attorney selects the code, but it directly determines the prevailing wage floor. Run the OFLC Wage Search with both codes for your work location to understand which classification supports a competitive offer.
Can my H-1B employer change my work location after I'm approved?
Yes, but it triggers a new LCA obligation. If your employer moves you to a worksite not covered by the original LCA, they must file an amended LCA for the new location before you begin working there. Maintenance Technicians who travel between multiple client sites or facilities need to confirm whether their employer has filed a blanket LCA or whether each site requires separate coverage.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm laid off from a Maintenance Technician role?
USCIS allows a 60-day grace period after involuntary termination, during which you can pursue a new employer willing to file an H-1B transfer petition. The new petition can be filed while you're still in the grace period, and you may be able to start the new role once the receipt notice is issued under portability rules. Document your termination date carefully, as the 60-day window begins on your last day of employment.
