Verify your credentials meet specialty occupation standards
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to MRI technology. An associate degree paired with ARRT MRI certification typically satisfies the requirement, but document the connection between your coursework and clinical duties before your employer files.
Target cap-exempt employers for faster sponsorship
Hospitals affiliated with universities or nonprofit research institutions are often cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition bypasses the annual lottery. Search for academic medical centers and teaching hospitals, where imaging departments regularly sponsor technologists outside the cap-subject pool.
Search H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter MRI Technologist roles by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. This shows you which imaging centers and health systems have actively sponsored the role before, saving you from applying to employers unlikely to navigate the process.
Confirm prevailing wage level before accepting an offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for MRI Technologists in your work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I through Level IV wages before negotiating, so you know whether the offer meets filing requirements.
Ask employers about premium processing during offer negotiations
Standard H-1B adjudication runs several months, which matters if your OPT or current status expires soon. Confirm upfront whether the employer will file Form I-907 for premium processing, which USCIS typically adjudicates within 15 business days.
Align your ARRT specialty certification with the job description
An offer letter that lists MRI-specific duties tied to your ARRT MRI credential strengthens the specialty occupation argument. Gaps between a generic radiology technologist description and your MRI certification can trigger an RFE, so work with the employer to tighten the job description before filing.

Find MRI Technologist JobsMRI Technologist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an MRI Technologist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but the qualification depends on how the employer documents the degree requirement. USCIS looks for a direct relationship between the degree field and the job duties. An associate degree plus ARRT MRI certification typically satisfies the requirement, and O*NET classifies MRI Technologists in a job zone that supports the specialty occupation standard. The employer's job description must reflect these requirements to avoid an RFE.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for MRI Technologists?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, outpatient imaging chains, and VA facilities are the most active H-1B sponsors for this role. Academic medical centers affiliated with universities often hold cap-exempt status, which means your petition bypasses the annual lottery entirely. You can browse MRI Technologist roles at employers with verified H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B lottery affect MRI Technologists?
If your employer is cap-subject, your petition enters the annual H-1B lottery with 85,000 available slots. Registrations open in March each year, and USCIS selects petitions by random draw. Cap-exempt employers, including nonprofit hospitals and university-affiliated medical centers, can file at any time without entering the lottery, making them strategically important targets for MRI Technologists seeking sponsorship.
What prevailing wage level applies to MRI Technologist H-1B petitions?
The DOL assigns wage levels based on experience and supervisory responsibility. Entry-level MRI Technologists typically fall at Level I or Level II, while senior or lead roles may reach Level III. The employer must certify on the LCA that your offered wage meets or exceeds the prevailing wage for your specific work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to verify the applicable level before accepting an offer.
Can an MRI Technologist transfer their H-1B to a new employer?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can begin working for a new employer as soon as they file a new H-1B petition on your behalf, without waiting for approval, provided your current H-1B was previously approved and you've maintained valid status. The new employer files a transfer petition with USCIS, and you're authorized to start the new role once USCIS receives the petition.
