Frame your degree against the specialty occupation standard
USCIS requires that a National Sales Director role normally demands at least a bachelor's in a specific field. If your degree is in a tangential area like communications, document how your coursework directly supports enterprise sales leadership and revenue strategy.
Target companies with existing LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter National Sales Director roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this occupation code. Past LCA filings signal an established sponsorship process, reducing the risk of an employer backing out mid-offer.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Run the National Sales Director SOC code through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer call. Your offered salary must meet at least the Level I prevailing wage, and knowing the tiers gives you a factual baseline when negotiating compensation with the hiring team.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment during employer screening
Ask whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before advancing past the first interview. Employers who aren't enrolled can still sponsor H-1B petitions, but government contractors and federal subcontractors are legally required to use it, which affects your onboarding timeline.
Get the job description tied to O*NET before filing
Work with your employer's immigration counsel to align your job description with the O*NET profile for Sales Managers or Chief Executives, whichever fits your actual duties. A description that maps cleanly to an O*NET specialty occupation reduces RFE risk on the I-129 petition.
Plan the cap timeline if you're switching from OPT or another status
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed for an October 1 start date. If your current OPT or other authorization expires before October 1, you'll need cap-gap coverage or a bridge strategy, so start identifying employers at least six months before your status ends.
H-1B Visa National Sales Director: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a National Sales Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer can show the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as business administration, marketing, or management. Generic sales leadership roles without a defined degree requirement can draw RFEs from USCIS, so the job description needs to clearly tie the duties to a specific academic discipline rather than treating any degree as sufficient.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for National Sales Director positions?
Enterprise software, medical device, financial services, and professional services firms are among the most active H-1B sponsors for senior sales leadership roles, based on DOL Labor Condition Application disclosure data. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified LCA filing history for this occupation, so you can focus your applications on companies that have already navigated the sponsorship process for comparable roles.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect National Sales Director offers?
The employer's offered salary must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for the National Sales Director occupation code in the specific metropolitan area where you'll work. The wage is determined by the employer when filing the LCA and is tiered by experience level. You can cross-check the applicable wage using the OFLC Wage Search before entering salary negotiations.
Can a National Sales Director on H-1B work remotely or across multiple states?
Yes, but the employer must file a separate LCA for each physical worksite or metropolitan area where you'll work for more than a short-term period. For a national sales role covering multiple regions, this is a common compliance issue. USCIS and DOL treat each certified work location separately, so your employer's immigration team needs to anticipate multi-site filings from the start.
What happens to my H-1B status if I'm promoted from a lower title to National Sales Director?
A promotion that materially changes your job duties, salary level, or location typically requires an amended H-1B petition filed with USCIS before the change takes effect. Moving into a National Sales Director title from a mid-level sales role usually crosses that threshold because the SOC code, wage level, and duties all shift. Your employer should file the amendment proactively rather than waiting until after the promotion is in effect.
