Document your specialty occupation credential match
Your degree field must align directly with customer marketing, not just business broadly. Pull the O*NET profile for Marketing Managers to confirm the education requirements USCIS uses when evaluating specialty occupation status for this title.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Customer Marketing Manager roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for this title. LCA history confirms an employer already understands the H-1B process for your specific occupation.
Verify prevailing wage before accepting an offer
Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 11-2021 in your target metro before negotiating. Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your level, and underpayment is grounds for denial regardless of employer intent.
Ask about cap-exempt employer status early
Universities, nonprofits attached to higher education, and certain research organizations are exempt from the annual H-1B lottery. If a customer marketing role exists at one of these institutions, you can file outside the April cap season.
Flag job descriptions that weaken specialty occupation standing
Postings that list a bachelor's degree as preferred rather than required can trigger a Request for Evidence from USCIS. Before applying, confirm the job description states a specific degree requirement in marketing, communications, or a directly related field.
Time your job search around the H-1B registration window
USCIS opens H-1B lottery registration each March for a roughly two-week window. Start your active employer outreach in January so you have an offer and a willing sponsor before the registration deadline closes.
H-1B Visa Customer Marketing Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Customer Marketing Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer's job description requires a bachelor's degree or higher in marketing, communications, business, or a directly related field. The role must not accept any unrelated degree as a substitute. USCIS evaluates the specific requirements in the LCA and I-129 petition, so a well-drafted job description is critical to avoiding a Request for Evidence.
How do I find employers who actively sponsor H-1B visas for marketing roles?
Migrate Mate shows verified LCA filing history by job title and employer, so you can identify companies that have specifically sponsored Customer Marketing Manager or related marketing roles under H-1B. This is more reliable than filtering by industry alone, because H-1B sponsorship willingness varies significantly even within the same sector.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Customer Marketing Manager role mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you change employers once your current petition has been pending for 180 days and you're moving into the same or a similar occupational classification. For Customer Marketing Manager roles, the new employer files an H-1B transfer petition and you can start work as soon as it's received, without waiting for approval.
What should I know about prevailing wage requirements for this role?
The DOL sets prevailing wages for Customer Marketing Manager positions by metro area and experience level using the OFLC Wage Search. Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your level and location, and this amount must be listed in the certified LCA. Roles in higher-cost metros like San Francisco or New York typically carry higher prevailing wage thresholds.
Does customer marketing work qualify for the H-1B cap exemption?
Not typically. Cap exemptions apply to employers, not occupations. You'd qualify for cap-exempt filing only if your Customer Marketing Manager role is at a qualifying institution such as a university, a nonprofit affiliated with higher education, or a government research organization. Most corporate or SaaS employers offering this role are cap-subject, meaning you must go through the annual April lottery.
