Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the Onboarding Specialist duties. A degree in HR, organizational behavior, or industrial psychology maps cleanly. A general business degree can work but may trigger an RFE requesting documentation of the connection.
Target employers with dedicated HR departments
Companies large enough to have standalone HR operations are far more likely to file H-1B petitions for onboarding roles than small businesses that treat onboarding as a shared duty. Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history in HR-related occupations.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your specific location and job zone. Run your offer through the OFLC Wage Search using the HR Specialists SOC code to confirm compliance before signing anything.
Ask about E-Verify enrollment during the offer stage
Onboarding Specialists often administer E-Verify themselves, so confirm your employer is already enrolled before your start date. An employer that isn't enrolled cannot legally onboard you, and H-1B status doesn't waive that requirement.
Align your start date with the H-1B cap timeline
Cap-subject H-1B petitions have an October 1 earliest start date. If your lottery registration is selected, build your offer negotiation around that constraint so your employer can plan the I-129 filing well ahead of the deadline USCIS sets.
Document your onboarding program ownership for the LCA
Your employer needs to demonstrate the role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Gather evidence that your position requires specialized knowledge: program design responsibilities, systems administration, or compliance workflows tied to a specific degree field, not general administrative tasks.
H-1B Visa Onboarding Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Onboarding Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. USCIS looks at whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Onboarding Specialist jobs that involve HR systems administration, compliance program design, or structured new-hire curriculum development tend to qualify. Roles framed as general administrative support are more vulnerable to an RFE. Your employer's job description needs to reflect the specialized nature of the work.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Onboarding Specialist positions?
Mid-to-large employers with dedicated HR departments are the most consistent sponsors for onboarding roles. Technology companies, healthcare systems, and financial institutions with high hiring volumes regularly file LCAs for HR Specialist positions. You can search Migrate Mate to find employers with verified H-1B filing history in HR-related job codes, which is more reliable than filtering by company size alone.
What SOC code applies to Onboarding Specialist jobs for the H-1B LCA?
Most Onboarding Specialist roles fall under SOC 13-1071 (Human Resources Specialists) or SOC 11-3121 (Human Resources Managers), depending on whether the position carries supervisory responsibilities. Your employer selects the code when filing the LCA with DOL. The code affects the prevailing wage your employer must certify, so confirm it matches your actual duties before the filing is submitted.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change Onboarding Specialist jobs?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition with USCIS, without waiting for approval, provided your current H-1B is valid and you haven't had a gap in authorized status. The new employer must file a new LCA and I-129 before your start date with them.
What documentation should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
Gather your official degree transcripts and diploma, any relevant certifications such as SHRM-CP or PHR, and a detailed job description that connects your degree field to the onboarding duties you'll perform. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a NACES-member evaluator is typically required. USCIS uses this documentation to confirm specialty occupation eligibility, so gaps here are the most common source of RFEs for HR roles.
