H-1B Visa Physical Therapist Assistant Jobs
Physical Therapist Assistant roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations when the position requires an associate's or bachelor's degree in physical therapy assisting. Employers in hospital systems, outpatient clinics, and skilled nursing facilities regularly file H-1B petitions for PTAs, making this one of the more accessible allied health paths to U.S. work authorization.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Physical Therapist Assistant
Verify your credential equivalency early
If your PTA degree came from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying. USCIS scrutinizes foreign allied health degrees, and a formal equivalency letter prevents RFEs that stall your petition.
Target health systems with H-1B filing history
Search Migrate Mate to filter Physical Therapist Assistant roles by employers who have active H-1B Labor Condition Application filings. This cuts your outreach list to facilities already familiar with the sponsorship process, not ones learning it for the first time.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and county. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for PTAs in your target geography before your offer letter is finalized.
Confirm state licensure timelines align with your H-1B start
PTA licensure requirements vary by state, and most require passing the NPTE before you can practice. Factor in exam scheduling and state board processing time so your license is active by your H-1B start date, not weeks after.
Clarify who pays which H-1B filing fees upfront
USCIS requires employers to cover the I-129 petition fee and the ACWIA training fee. Ask explicitly during negotiation which fees your employer will cover and whether they'll pay for premium processing, since PTA hiring timelines in clinical settings can be tight.
Understand the cap-subject lottery if you're changing employers
If you're already in the U.S. on a different visa status, a new H-1B with a new employer typically requires entering the annual cap lottery unless the employer is cap-exempt. Hospitals affiliated with nonprofit research institutions often qualify as cap-exempt, which changes your timeline entirely.
H-1B Visa Physical Therapist Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Physical Therapist Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, when the employer requires an associate's or bachelor's degree specifically in physical therapist assisting or a directly related field, the role meets USCIS's specialty occupation standard. The O*NET profile for PTAs lists a typical entry requirement of an associate's degree. If the job posting lists the degree as preferred rather than required, the employer may need to strengthen the LCA language before filing.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for PTAs most often?
Hospital systems, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and multi-location outpatient therapy groups file the most H-1B LCAs for Physical Therapist Assistants. Large health systems with dedicated HR immigration teams process these petitions more smoothly than small private practices. You can browse verified H-1B-sponsoring employers for PTA roles on Migrate Mate, filtered by location and facility type.
Can my employer sponsor my H-1B if I'm currently on OPT as a PTA?
Yes. If your employer files your H-1B registration before the April 1 deadline and you're selected in the lottery, your OPT remains valid until October 1 when the H-1B takes effect. If your OPT expires before October 1, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically, provided your employer filed before your OPT end date. Your employer should file the I-129 as early as possible to protect that cap-gap coverage.
What happens if my H-1B employer transfers me to a different clinic location?
A material change in worksite that falls outside the geographic area covered by your original LCA requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the transfer takes effect. Working at an uncovered location without an amended petition is a status violation. PTAs who rotate across multiple sites should confirm their employer has filed a blanket LCA covering all intended work locations.
How long does H-1B sponsorship take for a PTA role, and what can delay it?
Standard processing runs six to eight months from LCA filing through USCIS adjudication. Premium processing reduces the USCIS decision to 15 business days but doesn't speed up the DOL LCA certification, which typically takes seven business days. Common delays include RFEs challenging specialty occupation status for PTA roles, state licensure issues, or employer HR teams unfamiliar with the allied health petition process.
