Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Orthotist
Verify your ABC certification supports specialty occupation
USCIS evaluates whether your role requires a specific bachelor's degree. Your American Board for Certification credential, paired with a degree in orthotics and prosthetics, directly satisfies the specialty occupation standard. Have both ready before you apply.
Search LCA filings for orthotics-specific employers
Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by H-1B Labor Condition Application history in orthotics and prosthetics. This shows you which hospital systems and O&P practices have sponsored the job title before, not just general healthcare sponsors.
Target multi-site O&P networks over solo practices
Large orthotics networks have dedicated HR and legal teams familiar with H-1B filing timelines. Solo practices often lack the infrastructure to manage DOL prevailing wage requirements and I-129 petition deadlines without significant delays.
Confirm your employer will cover the prevailing wage
Your employer must file a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered wage meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your job zone and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search under SOC code 29-2091 before accepting an offer.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
Orthotist roles tied to hospital credentialing cycles have hard start dates. USCIS premium processing adjudicates your I-129 petition within 15 business days, which protects you if your employer's credentialing window closes before standard processing finishes.
Clarify cap-exempt status if your employer qualifies
Nonprofit hospitals, university-affiliated medical centers, and government research facilities are often cap-exempt under USCIS rules. If your employer qualifies, your petition bypasses the annual H-1B lottery entirely, removing the biggest timing risk in your job search.

Find Orthotist JobsOrthotist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an orthotist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS classifies orthotist positions as specialty occupations because the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in orthotics and prosthetics or a closely related field. A master's degree combined with American Board for Certification credentials strengthens the case further. Employers document the degree requirement in the job description when filing the Labor Condition Application with DOL.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for orthotists?
Hospital systems, Veterans Affairs medical centers, university-affiliated rehabilitation programs, and multi-location orthotics and prosthetics networks are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for orthotists. VA and other government-affiliated employers often qualify as cap-exempt, which means your petition can be filed at any time of year without entering the lottery. Use Migrate Mate to identify employers with verified H-1B filing history in this specialty.
Does board certification affect my H-1B petition as an orthotist?
American Board for Certification credentials are not a USCIS requirement for H-1B approval, but they strengthen your petition by demonstrating that the role meets a professional standard requiring specialized education. Many state licensure boards also require ABC certification, and your employer will likely list it as a job requirement in the Labor Condition Application, which reinforces the specialty occupation classification.
What is the prevailing wage for orthotist roles under H-1B rules?
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for SOC code 29-2091 in the geographic area where you'll work. Prevailing wages vary by location and experience level. You can verify the applicable wage tier using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Your employer certifies this wage requirement on the Labor Condition Application before USCIS adjudicates your I-129 petition.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new orthotics employer mid-status?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 allows you to start working for a new employer once the new I-129 petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your current H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status. Your new employer files a fresh Labor Condition Application with DOL and a new I-129 with USCIS. The O*NET profile for orthotists supports continuity of specialty occupation classification across employers.
