Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
Your bachelor's degree must be in music performance, piano pedagogy, or a directly related field. A general arts degree may trigger an RFE if the employer can't demonstrate the role requires that specific discipline.
Search LCA filings by SOC code
Pianists typically fall under SOC code 27-2042 (Musicians and Singers). Run that code through the OFLC Wage Search to identify employers who have filed LCAs for performing arts roles, not just broad arts categories.
Target institutions with cap-exempt status
Nonprofits affiliated with universities or research institutions can file H-1B petitions outside the annual cap. Many conservatories and university music programs qualify, which means you aren't competing in the April lottery.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history for performing arts and music roles. Seeing which institutions have filed before tells you where sponsorship conversations are already realistic.
Clarify employment structure before your offer
Performing arts roles are often per-service contracts or seasonal. USCIS requires H-1B employment to be an employer-employee relationship. Confirm with your prospective employer whether they can structure the engagement as qualifying full-time or part-time employment.
Prepare a credential evaluation for your degree
If your music degree is from outside the U.S., get a NACES-member evaluation before USCIS requests one. Evaluators assess whether your conservatory training is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's in music performance, which directly affects specialty occupation eligibility.

Find Pianist JobsPianist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Pianist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it's not automatic. USCIS requires the position to normally demand at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, such as music performance or piano performance. A staff pianist at a conservatory or university music department typically meets this threshold. A gigging accompanist hired without a degree requirement often does not. The job description and employer's hiring history matter significantly.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Pianists?
Universities and conservatories are the most consistent sponsors, partly because many qualify as cap-exempt nonprofits affiliated with higher education institutions. Symphony orchestras, opera companies, and performing arts nonprofits also file H-1B petitions for pianists. Entertainment companies and recording studios occasionally sponsor, though those cases are less common. You can browse employers with verified sponsorship history on Migrate Mate.
How does the H-1B cap affect Pianist sponsorship?
The standard H-1B cap is 85,000 visas per year, subject to an annual lottery in April. However, if your employer is a university, a nonprofit affiliated with a university, or a nonprofit research organization, they may be cap-exempt and can file at any time of year without lottery selection. Many conservatories and university music programs fall into this category, which makes cap-exempt employers worth prioritizing in your job search.
What documents should I prepare to support an H-1B petition for a Pianist role?
You'll need official transcripts and degree certificates demonstrating a music performance or related bachelor's degree, plus a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. Your employer will need to document why the role requires that specific degree. A portfolio of performance credits, competition results, and professional engagements supports the specialty occupation argument and can help if USCIS issues a Request for Evidence.
Can I check what prevailing wage applies to my Pianist role?
Yes. Your employer is required to pay at least the prevailing wage set by DOL for the relevant SOC code and geographic area before filing the LCA. You can look up the applicable wage level yourself using the OFLC Wage Search, filtering by the Musicians and Singers SOC code and your target city. The O*NET profile for that occupation also lists typical education and skill requirements that support the specialty occupation analysis.
