Align your resume to SOC codes
Platform Engineer roles often get filed under SOC 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators) or 15-1252 (Software Developers). Check O*NET to confirm which code matches your actual duties, then tailor your resume language accordingly so your LCA and petition align.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through IV wage for your SOC code and work location. If an offer falls below the posted prevailing wage, the employer can't file a compliant LCA, which blocks the H-1B petition entirely.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing options
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the April lottery. Platform Engineer roles at these institutions are a direct path around the annual cap.
Search verified sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by Platform Engineer roles on Migrate Mate to see employers with documented LCA filing history for infrastructure and platform positions. This surfaces companies that have already committed to the sponsorship process, not just those that say they're open to it.
Confirm your employer handles H-1B specialty occupation documentation
USCIS requires employers to document why a Platform Engineer role requires a specific bachelor's degree or higher. Get written confirmation that the employer's counsel can articulate the degree requirement clearly, since vague job descriptions are a common RFE trigger for platform and infrastructure titles.
Use your 60-day grace period strategically
If your H-1B employment ends, you have 60 days to secure a new employer and have them file a transfer petition. Platform Engineer skills are in high demand across cloud-native teams, so prioritize reaching out to companies with active infrastructure hiring before the window closes.
H-1B Visa Platform Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Platform Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Platform Engineer positions typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field. USCIS treats roles that involve designing and maintaining cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, or distributed systems as specialty occupations, provided the employer documents the degree requirement clearly in the petition.
Which SOC code does a Platform Engineer role fall under for LCA filing?
Most Platform Engineer roles are filed under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers) or SOC 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators), depending on whether the work is primarily software-defined infrastructure or network-layer operations. Cross-check your actual job duties against both profiles on O*NET to confirm which code your employer's counsel should use, since the SOC code determines the prevailing wage requirement.
How do I find employers that actively sponsor H-1B visas for Platform Engineers?
Migrate Mate shows verified LCA filing history by role and employer, so you can filter specifically for companies that have filed for Platform Engineer or related infrastructure titles. This is more reliable than asking recruiters, since LCA data reflects actual sponsorship activity rather than stated willingness.
Can a Platform Engineer transfer their H-1B to a new employer mid-petition?
Yes. Under AC21 portability, you can transfer your H-1B to a new employer once your I-140 has been approved and your I-485 has been pending for 180 days or more, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. For earlier-stage transfers, the new employer simply files a new H-1B transfer petition and you can begin work as soon as USCIS receives it.
What documentation should I gather before an employer files my H-1B petition as a Platform Engineer?
Compile your educational credentials, including degree certificates and transcripts, and get a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S. Collect documentation of any specialized certifications in Kubernetes, Terraform, or cloud platforms, since these can support the specialty occupation argument. Your employer will also need an active LCA from DOL before USCIS will accept the I-129 petition.
