H-1B Visa Purchasing Specialist Jobs
Purchasing Specialist roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship as specialty occupations requiring a bachelor's degree in supply chain management, business, or a related field. Employers file the LCA and I-129 on your behalf, and many mid-to-large procurement teams sponsor regularly. No lottery exemption applies, so timing your job search around the April registration window matters.

Map your degree to SOC codes
Purchasing Specialists typically fall under SOC 13-1023. Pull your O*NET profile and confirm your degree field aligns with the listed education requirements before applying. A mismatch between your credentials and the posted role weakens the specialty occupation argument.
Target LCA-active procurement employers
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers who have filed LCAs for Purchasing Specialist or related procurement titles. Companies with recent LCA history have already cleared the DOL prevailing-wage step, which signals an active sponsorship process rather than a first attempt.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC 13-1023 in your target metro before any salary discussion. Your offered wage must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage at the applicable level, and knowing the floor prevents you from accepting an offer that USCIS would flag.
Ask about E-Verify enrollment during screening
Confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify before advancing past the first interview. Non-enrolled companies cannot legally complete your I-9 verification, and discovering this late in the process costs you weeks during a time-sensitive H-1B filing cycle.
Build a specialty occupation evidence file early
Gather job descriptions from past roles that list degree requirements, not just preferred qualifications. USCIS scrutinizes Purchasing Specialist petitions closely when the LCA uses broad language, so documented proof that prior employers required a specific degree strengthens your I-129 package.
Understand the cap timeline for procurement hiring
H-1B registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. Procurement roles at cap-subject employers must be structured around this cycle. If you receive an offer in May, your employer files the following April and your start date is October of the next fiscal year.
H-1B Visa Purchasing Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Purchasing Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer can document that the role requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as supply chain management, business administration, or operations management. USCIS evaluates the job duties and the employer's normal minimum requirements. Roles that list a degree as preferred rather than required are harder to support, so the job description wording matters significantly.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Purchasing Specialist positions?
Large manufacturers, aerospace and defense contractors, hospital systems, and Fortune 500 retailers sponsor most frequently because they run centralized procurement functions with dedicated HR and legal teams. You can identify active sponsors by filtering for employers with LCA filing history in procurement and supply chain occupations on Migrate Mate, which surfaces verified DOL Labor Condition Application data by role and employer.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I switch purchasing roles?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been maintaining valid status. Your new employer files a new I-129 and LCA specific to the Purchasing Specialist role, and you don't need to wait for approval before starting.
What prevailing wage level applies to most H-1B Purchasing Specialist roles?
Most entry-to-mid-level Purchasing Specialist positions file at DOL wage Level 1 or Level 2, depending on the complexity of duties and supervisory responsibilities. Senior or category management roles with cross-functional scope typically require Level 2 or Level 3. You can verify the applicable wage for your specific metro area using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting any offer.
Does procurement experience from outside the U.S. count toward H-1B eligibility?
Foreign work experience counts toward your qualifications, but it doesn't substitute for the degree requirement that defines specialty occupation status. USCIS evaluates whether your combination of education and experience establishes the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree in a relevant field. A credential evaluation from a recognized service can document that equivalency if your degree was earned outside the U.S.
