H-1B Visa Python Engineer Jobs
Python Engineer roles qualify as H-1B visa specialty occupations under the software developer SOC code, meaning your employer files the Labor Condition Application with DOL before petitioning USCIS. The 85,000-cap lottery runs once per fiscal year, so timing your job search around the registration window directly affects your start date.

Map your Python skills to SOC codes
USCIS evaluates your petition against the SOC code your employer selects. Pull the O*NET profile for Software Developers (15-1252) to confirm your duties align before your employer files, since a mismatch is a common RFE trigger.
Verify prevailing wage before accepting offers
Your employer must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search using your job title and ZIP code before negotiating, so you know whether the offer clears the Level I through IV threshold.
Target employers with cap-exempt filing history
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B isn't subject to the lottery. If you want a guaranteed start date, filtering for these employer types on Migrate Mate narrows your search immediately.
Audit your OPT end date against H-1B timelines
USCIS must receive your I-129 petition by April 1 for an October 1 start. If your OPT expires before October 1, confirm your employer can bridge the gap through cap-gap protection, which only applies if you're on F-1 and selected in the lottery.
Request the certified LCA before signing an offer
DOL certifies the LCA before your employer can file the H-1B petition. Ask for a copy once it's certified. If the LCA lists a wage level or job title that doesn't match your offer letter, get it corrected before USCIS receives the I-129.
Check your employer's E-Verify enrollment status
USCIS requires H-1B employers to be enrolled in E-Verify for cap-subject petitions. Confirm your prospective employer's enrollment before investing time in the interview process. An unenrolled employer can't file on your behalf.
H-1B Visa Python Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Python Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS consistently approves Python Engineer and broader software developer roles as specialty occupations because the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a directly related field. Your employer's job description must reflect that degree requirement, not just list it as preferred. If the posting says 'bachelor's preferred' rather than 'required,' USCIS may issue an RFE questioning specialty occupation status.
How do I find Python Engineer roles at companies that actively sponsor H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters Python Engineer listings by employers with verified H-1B Labor Condition Application filing history, so you're not applying blindly to companies that don't sponsor. DOL's LCA disclosure data is publicly available and updated quarterly, which is the underlying signal Migrate Mate uses to surface sponsoring employers.
Can my employer sponsor my H-1B for a fully remote Python Engineer position?
Yes, but the LCA must list the actual worksite location where you'll be performing work, not just the employer's headquarters. For fully remote roles, DOL requires the LCA to cover each location where you'll regularly work, including your home address. If you move states after your H-1B is approved, your employer may need to file an amended petition with USCIS to update your worksite.
What happens to my H-1B if my Python Engineer role is eliminated or my employment ends?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsoring employer, change status, or leave the country. Your new employer must file an H-1B transfer petition before the grace period expires. If you're within six years of your original H-1B approval, a new employer can transfer the remaining time rather than starting a new cap-subject petition.
Does my Python Engineer contract or freelance work affect H-1B eligibility?
H-1B status requires an employer-employee relationship, which means the sponsoring company must control your work, set your hours, and direct your day-to-day tasks. Staffing agency placements are permitted under H-1B rules, but the agency is the petitioner of record even if you're placed at a client site. Pure independent contracting arrangements don't meet USCIS requirements for H-1B sponsorship.
